Waynesburg college topples La Roche The Waynesburg College men’s basketball team broke open a close game Saturday in the second half, outscoring visiting La Roche, 50-34, on the Yellow Jackets way to an 85-65 non-conference victory.

Twelve different Waynesburg players scored with Marc Lodovico leading the attack with 12 points. Josh Parisi scored 11 points off the bench for the Yellow Jackets (3-5) with Shawn Coleman in double figures with 10 points.

Demetrius Pringle scored 16 points for La Roche (2-5) with Devin Taylor contributing a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Nate Davis was also in double digits with 10 points.

Girls basketball

Connellsville 44, Ringgold 40, OT – Brittney Radic nailed a jumper at the buzzer to force overtime, but Brooke Bryner scored four of her 12 points in the extra period to help the Lady Falcons to a non-section home victory.

The teams were tied at 7-all after the first quarter, but Connellsville nudged ahead in the second quarter for a 20-16 halftime lead. The Lady Rams tied the game at the end of the third quarter.

Bryner made a field goal and two free throws while Ashley Benzio accounted for the other two overtime points with a pair of free throws. Connellsville (5-2) never trailed in overtime.

Benzio led Connellsville with 17 points.

Amy Kifus scored 12 points for Ringgold (5-2) with Tonya Lewis adding 10.

Girls swimming

Fairmont (W.Va.) 117, Laurel Highlands 53 – Fairmont had the better of the day with the Fillies taking only two individual first places and one of the three relays. Laurel Highlands slips to 3-3 overall.

Theresa Reilly had a pair of WPIAL qualifying swims, winning the 50 freestyle in 25.71 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 57.10 seconds. The 400 freestyle relay team of Kelly Houston, Elizabeth Ulmer, Reilly and Erin Perry was victorious in a time of 4:10.62.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Erin Barbetta swam unattached in the meet, recording WPIAL qualifying times of 25.59 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 57.56 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

Boys swimming

Laurel Highlands 110, Fairmont (W.Va.) 72 – The Mustangs had a strong outing against a perennially strong squad, taking first in nine of 12 events. Laurel Highlands improves to 6-0 overall.

The 200 medley relay team of Adam Collins, Steve Hunchuck, Chris Hunchuck and Ben Bonchosky got the ball rolling with a win in 1:46.99. Collins won the 200 IM (2:07.97) and 100 freestyle (50.91). Chris Hunchuck was first in the 100 butterfly (58.21) and 500 freestyle (5:33.79) with Steve Hunchuck winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.79. The 200 freestyle relay team of Tony Marghella, Jimmy Tesauro, Bonchosky and Collins won in 1:38.17 while the 400 freestyle relay team of Tesauro, Steve Hunchuck, Chris Hunchuck and Marghella capped the meet with a win in 3:49.10.

All the winning performances met the WPIAL qualifying standard.

Bonchosky rounded out the victory by winning the diving competition with 139.80 points.

Boys basketball

Waynesburg Central 54, Linsly (W.Va.) School 41 – The Raiders had to travel out of state to play in the Washington County Hoopfest, but the trip to Wheeling Jesuit University was worth the time with a non-section win Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders (4-4) led 11-10 after the first quarter, added six to the lead at the half, and three more after three quarters.

Nate Stoner had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, as did Anthony Bocchini with 12 points and 10 assists. C.J. Mason added 12 points to the attack.

Johnstown Christian 62, Turkeyfoot Valley 55 – The Rams fell behind early Friday night and couldn’t recover for a non-section loss in Johnstown. Turkeyfoot is still searching for its first win, dropping to 0-4 overall.

Bill Hinzy led the Rams with 25 points. Tim Wass had 10 points and eight rebounds with Nathan Glass scoring 11 points. Eric Wass grabbed six rebounds.

Tyler Todd led the home squad with 20 points.

Wrestling

Belle Vernon 54, Yough 28 – The Weslagers almost scored enough points alone to win the match, a Section 2-AA road victory at Yough. Belle Vernon improves to 2-1 in the section and 7-6 overall.

Jeremy Weslager won a 6-4 decision at 103 pounds with Jason Weslager (125) and Jacob Weslager (130) both winning by fall in 58 seconds. Zach Bell (119), Travis Dunn (135), Dan Sauritich (145), Shawn Dilmore (160), Justin Brumley (189) and Matt Perry (275) all won by fall.

McGuffey 36, Albert Gallatin 33 – Allen Myers’ fall at 275 pounds gave the Colonials its 33rd point, but that would be all the home team would get as the Highlanders won the last three bouts, all falls, for a non-section road victory.

Brad Zitney opened with a 2-1 decision at 130 pounds for the Colonials. After losing by fall at 135 pounds and forfeiting at 140, Albert Gallatin reeled off falls by Dave Bryson (145), Lance Bryson (152), Mark Brown (160) and Charlie Belch (171).

McGuffey slowed the momentum with back-to-back decisions before Myers’ victory.

Albert Gallatin (2-1) travels to Thomas Jefferson for a Section 2-AAA match Wednesday night.
