Frazier slams Trinity Christian, 71-32 The visitors didn’t have much fight Tuesday night as Frazier moved out to a 27-12 first quarter lead, coasting to a 71-32 Section 3-A victory over visiting Trinity Christian. Things bottomed out for Trinity Christian in the third quarter when the visitors were outscored 15-1.
Steven Erdely led the Commodores (5-4) with 14 points. Will Bronson was in double figures again with 11 points, adding eight assists. Ryan Keebler grabbed 15 rebounds.
Phil Spint was the lone Trinity Christian player in double digits with 11.
Indiana 41, Brownsville 35 – The Falcons led 30-29 after three quarters, but couldn’t hold on the final eight minutes for a disappointing Section 3-AAA road loss to the Indians.
Brownsville (5-3) trailed at halftime, but moved into the lead on the strength of a 13-7 third quarter.
Adam Kezmarsky led the Falcons with 15 points with Kevin Garbutt adding 10.
Elizabeth-Forward 69, Waynesburg Central 49 – A poor second quarter proved costly to the Raiders in this Section 4-AAA loss at Elizabeth-Forward.
After taking an 11-9 lead in the first quarter, Waynesburg fell behind when the Warriors posted a 21-10 scoring edge in the second quarter to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room.
Anthony Bocchini and C.J. Mason led the Raiders with 14 points apiece, while Steve Swiech led all scorers with 26 for E-F.
Geibel Catholic 85, Mapletown 40 – Kellen Holmes led the Gators with 20 points in this lopsided Section 2-AA boys game that featured only two free throws combined by both teams.
Rob Ramsey added 14 and John Maczko scored 12 as Geibel Catholic jumped to a 48-20 halftime lead and never looked back.
The Gators didn’t attempt a free throw in the game and Mapletown’s Brad Hartman made his team’s only two foul shots. Only four fouls were called in the game.
The win was No. 690 for Geibel Catholic coach Ken Misiak, who goes for No. 691 Thursday at home against Carmichaels. Mapletown is off until the Carmichaels Lions Club Christmas Tournament, which begins Monday.
Geibel Catholic improved to 2-0 in section games and 5-1 overall. Hartman led Mapletown (0-3, 0-8) with 12 points.
Carmichaels 49, Avella 41 – The Mikes needed an extra five minutes, but the work was worth it for a Section 2-A home victory. The game seesawed over three quarters with the Eagles tying the game with a 7-6 fourth quarter. The Mikes held Avella to just four points in the overtime period while scoring 12.
Jeff Lapkowicz led the Mikes (4-3) with 14 points. Tyrone Pinson added 12 and Derek Maynard had 11 in the victory.
Drew Klem had 11 and Ike Hohn added 10 for Avella.
California 64, West Greene 38 – The Trojans raced out to a 16-point first quarter lead, and then held off a plucky Pioneer squad for a Section 2-A road victory. California improves to 2-1 in the section and 2-6 overall while West Greene falls to 0-3 and 0-7.
Woody Stewart was the go-to guy for California with a game-high 29 points. Mike Galis added 13 to the winning effort.
Travis Isiminger scored 13 for the Pioneers with Jake Kerch adding 11.
Portage 81, Turkeyfoot Valley 53 – The Rams fell to far behind in the first quarter, 19 points, to rally for a non-section win on the road Monday night. Turkeyfoot remains winless at 0-5 overall.
Nathan Glass had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Rams. Bill Hinzy scored 15 points, dished out four assists and made six steals for Turkeyfoot.
Randy Spaid scored a game-high 29 points for Portage while teammate Brian Adams added 22.
Girls basketball
West Greene 65, California 31 – Rachel Phillips had another well-rounded performance, leading the Lady Pioneers to a Section 2-A home victory. Phillips scored a game-high 30 points to go along with eight rebounds, three blocks, six assists and five steals.
West Greene (2-0, 3-4) built an 8-point lead in the first quarter, steadily building the advantage to 20 points at halftime and 30 points after three quarters.
Allison Hildreth added 13 points with Natasha Woods strong on the boards with 10 rebounds.
Julie Evans led the Lady Trojans (0-3, 0-5) with 11 points.
Men’s basketball
California (Pa.) 89, Mansfield 79 – Drew Schifino and Boris Mesnager both recorded double-doubles to lead the Vulcans to a cross-over PSAC home contest. California improves to 6-3 overall while Mansfield evens out at 4-4.
Schifino had a team-high 25 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Mesnager also had 13 rebounds, adding a career-high 22 points. Travis Eisentrout wasn’t far behind Schifino and Mesnager, scoring a season-high 20 points on the strength of 10-of-12 shooting from the field. Damar Ruffin’s 10 points helped the Vulcans extend their win streak to three games.
Millersville 78, Clarion 64 – Uniontown graduate Terrance Vaughns scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to help the Eagles win a PSAC cross-over game.
Women’s basketball
California (Pa.) 71, Mansfield 46 – The Vulcans put the game away in the second half, easing to a PSAC crossover win at home. California improves to 6-2 overall.
It was a big night for Sara McKinney with the senior guard scoring a game-high 18 points, moving her into second place on the Vulcans’ career scoring list with 1,644 points. She also contributed eight rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.
Three other Vulcans were in double figures with Erin Dillon scoring 15, Lisa Gottuso adding 12 and Dani Mills finishing with 10 points.
