Lots of basketball action for sports fans

High schools are taking a break from classes in the final week of 2004, but athletes are finishing the year with a flurry of action with basketball and wrestling tournaments filling the sports calendar. Carmichaels, Waynesburg Central and Beth-Center are hosting basketball tournaments while Southmoreland hosts a wrestling tournament with a plethora of basketball action within an hour’s drive throughout the week.

The perennial Lions Christmas Tournament begins Monday with Carmichaels playing Greene County rival Mapletown at 6 p.m. with Bentworth playing Beth-Center at 8.

Waynesburg will host a tournament for both boys and girls basketball teams. The Raiders play McGuffey at 8 p.m. Monday with Valley playing Washington at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Lady Raiders will play the Lady Gators of Geibel Catholic at 6:30 p.m. on Monday with Brownsville taking on Chartiers-Houston at 5 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs will play the nightcap on Tuesday with the host squad playing California. Avella and Carmichaels kick off the action at 6 p.m.
