Frazier tops Brownsville in consolation game
Geibel wins Charleroi tournament For the second year in a row, Geibel Catholic has won the Charleroi Holiday Tournament, beating the host Cougars in Wednesday night’s championship game, 74-68.
“Our kids played well, they did what they had to do.” Geibel coach Ken Misiak stated after the game. “I’m glad for the kids. They wanted to win it again this year and they did it.”
Frazier downed Brownsville 51-32 in the consolation game.
Kellen Holmes and Rob Ramsey were hot again for Geibel, as the duo combined to score 47 points.
Holmes led all scorers in the first quarter with eight points. Joe Fagan added four and Mitch Erdely put up a 3-pointer to keep the Gators ahead of Chad Young and the Cougars.
Although Young had seven points in the first quarter, Charleroi couldn’t catch the Gators who were up 22-17.
The Cougars’ Alex Kirtley began to chip away at the Gators’ lead early in the second half but Mario Fragello put up two 3-pointers to keep Geibel ahead.
Charleroi pulled close, as eight successive points from Young gave the Cougars the lead.
Geibel was hot from the three-point line though, and Michael Speelman’s two long fielders were enough to put the Gator’s ahead 44-41 at the half.
The game stayed close in the third quarter with teams slowing the pace considerably.
Devaron Ford brought the score within one point, but Ramsey made two baskets before Ford could score again.
A basket by Joe Fagan and two each from Holmes and Ramsey put the game just out of reach.
The Gators grabbed the lead and ran with it. They moved to a 61-49 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Geibel kept the lead in the fourth.
Joe Fagan, who had 10 points for the Gators, fouled out with five minutes remaining.
The rest of the Gators kept up the pressure. Erdely scored two points, and Holmes and Ramsey each added five to preserve the victory.
Ramsey was named to the AllTournament Team, and Kellen Holmes was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Misiak said, “When Charleroi began to chisel away at our lead we just got the ball into the hands of Ramsey and Holmes. They got the job done.”
In the consolation game, Steven Erdely and Wayne Lonce combined for 24 points as Frazier jumped out of the gate early.
Erdely tossed in 12 points, all of which came behind the three-point stripe, and Lonce also scored 12 points, including four points at the foul line.
Kevin Garbutt led all scorers for the Falcons with 14 points.
The Commodore defense held Brownsville to single digits in each of the four quarters.
Brownsville coach George Bortz said, “We got behind early and we aren’t capable of catching up. They played hard in the last three and a half quarters but once you get behind its hard to catch up.”
