Mill Run rolls to 19-0 County League win over Connellsville

By Jim Kriek For The 3 min read

MILL RUN – This was one time that manager Ray Orndorff was wishing baseball could be a little bit like the banking profession – opening an escrow account. If such had been the case, he could have “banked” 18 runs and had them to draw on for future games when the going gets a little bit close and rough.

Mill Run scored in every inning, capped with a nine-run burst in the second, to collar Connellsville, 19-0 in Fayette County Baseball League play here yesterday for its fourth win in as many starts.

The league leaders backed pitchers Mike Doppelheuer and Jeff Kooser with a 13-hit offense, every starter having at least one, including three by Dan Gratchic.

Kris Firestone had two triples and four runs driven across, Jeremy Miller and Justin Marsinko both had doubles, and Chris Marsinko and John Warrick each had a brace of singles.

Connellsville had only two hits, a game lead-off single by Mike Miskanin, and Bob Keslar’s one-out single in the fourth.

The closest Connellsville came to scoring was in the second when J.W. Eddy was safe on an error leading off, stole second, and went to third on an out.

Orndorff noted, “We got good pitching from Mike and Jeff, and we hit the ball, made contact, put it in play, along with playing good defense. Everything you have to do to win.”

Manager Kevin McIntosh said of his team’s second loss, “Everything we did right to win on Tuesday we did wrong today. And we didn’t hit.”

Mill Run got all the edge they would need in the first, taking a 3-0 lead on Chris Marsinko’s single, Miller’s double, Firestone’s first triple, and an error.

It was 12-0 in the second. Justin Marsinko and Chris Marsinko walked, and Dennis Show singled to load the bases. Miller walked to force in one, and Firestone cleaned the bases with his second triple, being tagged at the plate on the relay from left to prevent a grand slam. Then Doppelheuer, Warrick, and Brandon Bryner singled, and Justin Marsinko doubled, to go along with a fielder’s choice and two errors.

Gratchic singled in the third, and came around on an error and Warrick’s single. Three more crossed in the fourth on an error, Chris Marsinko’s single, a force play, and Gratchic’s single. Three in the fifth closed scoring, coming on two walks, a fielder’s choice, two errors, and Gratchic’s third single.

Mill Run will now be off until next Thursday when it is scheduled to host old rival Bud Murphy’s. Connellsville will play New Salem Art at Redstone on Sunday, at 1 p.m.
