Geibel and Frazier square off in semifinal match at Penn State Fayette
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, will host a WPIAL Class A girls volleyball semifinal at 7 p.m. today. Undefeated Frazier takes on Geibel Catholic, whose only two losses have come against Frazier, for the right to play in the WPIAL championship match at 2 p.m. Saturday at North Allegheny High School.
The Frazier-Geibel winner will meet the winner of the Farrell-North Catholic game, which will be played at 6 p.m. today at Montour.
The campus has been planning to host WPIAL playoff events as a means of spreading the word about their improved facilities, including the new arena that will host tonight’s volleyball event.
“When word gets out, it’s going to be a boon,” men’s basketball coach J. Budd Grebb said. “This is an excellent campus here with an excellent staff. We needed something like this.”
Grebb knows hosting WPIAL events is a way to attract interest in the campus. With two local teams coming in tonight, a large crowd is expected.
“If people would come out here and look at the technology center right next door, they would realize kids wouldn’t have to leave the area for employment or education,” Grebb said. “We have it all right here in Fayette County. It’s a win-win situation for the campus and for the technology park.”
The gymnasium was dedicated late in the summer. Grebb said the campus will host a boys basketball tip-off tournament involving four local teams – Brownsville, Southmoreland, Geibel Catholic and Frazier – Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10-11.
