Shady Side Academy graduates Drew Edward Bonessa (above) and Dirk Arthur Bonessa are brothers with ties to the local area who have excelled in athletics and academics. Dirk, a 2002 high school graduate, was a W. Pa. All-Star in both soccer and baseball for the Indians. He is currently a junior at Allegheny College in Meadville where he plays on the baseball team and is majoring in chemistry. Drew, a 2004 high school graduate, played football his junior and senior years for the Indians and was named to the Allegheny Football Conference Scholar Athlete Team. Drew also was an All-American in lacrosse where helped his team reach the state final and led another squad to a gold medal at the Keystone Games. Drew is currently attending Swarthmore College in Philadelphia where he is on the lacrosse team. In high school, Drew and his fellow teammates donated food and served the homeless at the Rainbow Kitchen on Thanksgiving each year. Dirk and Drew are sons of Dennis and Bernadine Bonessa of Fox Chapel, and grandsons of Lou and Alfreda Kopec, and Arthur and Jo Bonessa of Masontown.
