Connellsville girls tennis team defeats Latrobe, 3-2 The Connellsville girls tennis team saved the best for last as the Lady Falcons defeated Section 1-AAA champion Latrobe 3-2 in a non-section match on Wednesday.
The Lady Falcons’ season ends with a 13-5 overall record and 5-5 in Section 5-AAA.
“It was a very good win for us,” said Connellsville coach Don Campbell. “I thought we played our best match of the year.”
Latrobe peeled off the first two victories, as last year’s state champ and this year’s WPIAL champ Mickela Kissel defeated Lauren Hartz 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles match and Allie Seranko downed Lindsey Weimer 6-0, 6-2 in the second singles.
Kayla Naugle put Connellsville on the scoreboard in No. 3 singles, as she made quick work of Sarah Charley, 6-2, 6-1.
Connellsville swept the doubles matches as the team of Megan Parsons and Miranda Hughes defeated Keri Matson and Martina Helfrich by the scores of 6-4 and 6-4.
In the final match, Amy Lucas and Amanda Stout had a tough time with Emily Mayer and Tammy Malady, but in the end, squeaked out a 7-6, 7-2 in the tiebreaker and 6-4 victory.
Girls soccer
Geibel Catholic 3, Monessen 2 – Jessica Davis scored Geibel’s first goal and later added the game winner with two minutes remaining, as the Lady Gators defeated Monessen in a Section 1-AA match.
Teammate Kaitlyn Fagan scored in the 39th minute of the second half and assisted on Davis’ first score.
Marion Laurion posted 13 saves for Geibel and Kelly Mornack stopped nine shots for the Lady Greyhounds.
Alicia Stein and Carlie Cocciolone scored unassisted goals for Monessen.
Geibel (4-10, 4-9) is back in action at 7 p.m. today at Beth-Center.
Connellsville 5, Albert Gallatin 0 – Liz Bell recorded the hat trick for Connellsville, as the Lady Falcons blanked host Albert Gallatin in a Section 6-AAA contest.
Lindsay O’Donnell and Rachel Blasko each scored and assisted on a goal for the Lady Falcons.
Connellsville travels to Riverview for a tough match at 3:45 p.m. today.
Laurel Highlands 3, Uniontown 0 – Talia Lancaster found the back of the net and assisted on another, as Laurel Highlands came out on top of a Section 6-AAA match against host Uniontown.
Emily Bota scored the lone goal in the first half on the assist by Jessica DuBois.
Molly Macioce opened the second half with a goal assisted by Lancaster.
Stacy Ridley was in at goal for the Fillies, and she stopped five Uniontown shots, while Emily Brower had 12 saves for the Lady Red Raiders.
Boys golf
Albert Gallatin 210, Connellsville 213 – Despite the soggy conditions, Albert Gallatin finished it’s season on a high note with a three-stroke victory at home over Connellsville in a Division I, Section 2 match.
Albert Gallatin’s Drew Callahan took medallist honors with an even-par 35 on the front nine at Duck Hollow.
Connellsville’s Jonathan Luczka finished three strokes behind, and AG’s Kevin Uglik rounded out the top three finishers as he carded a 41.
The Colonials finish their season at 5-9 in the section and 8-9 overall, and the Falcons also finish at 5-9 in the section and 5-11 overall.
Volleyball
Laurel Highlands 3, Uniontown 0 – Samantha Zavatchen led with 12 service points and five kills en route to a shutout victory over cross-town rival Uniontown in a non-section match-up (25-17, 25-17, 25-22).
Jessica Galica and Erin Perry added five kills for the Fillies.
Susan Lengvarsky led Uniontown with 13 assists, while Kelly Palya had seven kills and Marissa Voytek added five blocks.
Laurel Highlands also won the junior varsity match by the scores of 25-22 and 25-18.
Uniontown takes to the road Monday against Mapletown, and LH hosts Connellsville at 6 p.m. today.
Geibel Catholic 3, Carmichaels 0 – Chelsey Kreinbrook led the way with 41 service points and 25 assists en route to an easy Section 6-A victory over host Carmichaels by the scores of 25-4, 25-5 and 25-14.
Teammate Michelle Tascione recorded 11 service points, while Natalie Hozak and Samantha Hawk added six and four kills, respectively.
The Lady Gators (8-1, 10-1) return home today to take on West Greene.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Mapletown 0 – The Jefferson-Morgan girls’ volleyball team extended its overall record to 11-4 and 7-3 in Section 5-A, as it downed visiting Mapletown.
Ashley Naylor led the attack with 13 service aces, and Rachel Weaver added five kills.
Next up on the J-M schedule is section leader Frazier on Oct. 19 at home.
