Connellsville girls slam Canon-Mac in tennis The Lady Big Macs took the first singles match, and after that, it was all Connellsville as they rolled to an easy 4-1 Section 5-AAA victory on Thursday in girls tennis action.
Canon-Mac’s Kristi Toward defeated Lauren Hartz (6-4, 6-1) in the first match.
Lindsey Weimer battled back in the second singles match as she defeated Chelsea Barton 7-6, 7-5 in the tiebreaker, 2-6 and 6-4.
“Lindsey probably had the biggest battle,” said Connellsville coach Don Campbell. “She was on the court for over three hours and gutted it out.”
Megan Parsons claimed the final singles match over Kristin Fromholzer by the scores of 6-2, 6-3.
Connellsville continued to roll in the doubles matches as the team of Miranda Hughes and Amy Lucas defeated Cadlin Cerenzia and Becca Petras 6-2, 4-6 and 6-1. The second doubles match also went the Lady Falcons as Amanda Stout and Kristen Pletcher defeated Melissa Alauzen and Suzi Hofrichter 6-2, 6-2.
“They hung in there today,” Campbell said of his doubles teams. “I thought overall we came back pretty good after yesterday’s match.”
Connellsville is back in action today as it visits Kiski Area in a non-section match at 3:30 p.m.
Boys golf
Mount Pleasant 196, Connellsville 210 – Mount Pleasant’s Mark Novak and Connellsville’s Jonathan Luczka fired even par rounds of 36, but Mount Pleasant came through in the fourth and fifth matches as they defeated the Falcons in Division I, Section 2 action at Norvelt Golf Course on Thursday.
Connellsville’s Cody Boors finished one stroke off the pace and carded an eagle on the fourth hole.
Anthony Prailey (39) and Josh Coccagna (40) rounded out the top three places for the Vikings.
The Falcons are back in action in an non-section match on Monday at Ringgold, while Mount Pleasant (4-2, 4-3) visits Belle Vernon on Sept. 13. The match is set for 3 p.m. at Willowbrook Golf Course.
Boys cross country
Frazier 23, Albert Gallatin 32 – Pat Reagan finished a full minute ahead of the pack as the Frazier boys’ cross-country team defeated Albert Gallatin in a non-section meet. Reagan finished with a time of 19:13.
The Commodores claimed the next three spots, led by Kenny Miller (20:50), Matt Carson (21:17) and Derek Miller (21:32).
Jared Lint broke the string for Albert Gallatin as he claimed the fifth spot with a time of 22:12.
Rounding out the top ten were Frazier’s Todd Feeney (22:22), Albert Gallatin’s Drew Callahan (22:51), Frazier’s Tim Hela (22:52), Albert Gallatin’s Eric Leach (22:53) and Albert Gallatin’s John Bozeck (23:48).
Frazier improves to 1-1 while Albert Gallatin falls to 0-1. Both teams are participating in the California University of Pa. Invitational on Saturday.
Girls cross country
Frazier 14, Albert Gallatin 40 – The Lady Commodores claimed seven of the 10 top spots as they cruised to an easy non-section win over Albert Gallatin.
Frazier claimed the first six places with junior Rebecca Leary led the way with a time of 22:36. Sister Meghan Leary claimed the second spot with a time of 24:40 and Erin Sizemore finished third at 25:40.
Teammates Heather Priester finished fourth (26:10), Erica Sendek finished fifth (27:10) and Jenna Boyles sixth with a time of 28:47.
Albert Gallatin’s Meghan Bowers crossed the finish line in seventh place with a time of 28:49.
Frazier’s Jessica Hudik finished eighth (29:04) and Sara Inks was ninth with a time of 31:02.
Frazier evened its record to 1-1, Albert Gallatin drops to 0-1.
Along with the boys teams, both Frazier and Albert Gallatin will participate in the California University of Pa. Invitational on Saturday.
Girls volleyball
Laurel Highlands 3, Brownsville 0 – Abby DeHaas led with 11 service points and 14 assists as Laurel Highlands blanked Brownsville (0-3) in a non-section match.
The game scores were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-18.
Jessica Galica and Katie Semans each added seven kills.
“I think we needed to improve tonight,” said LH coach Nancy Wheeler. “We’ll take the win anyway.”
Nicole Williams led Brownsville with five service points and four kills. Bethany Jurczak, Maggie Grahek and Jessica Robaugh added four service points.
The Fillies will participate in the California University of Pa. Tournament on Saturday, returning home on Tuesday to host Trinity in Section 2-AAA action.
Geibel Catholic 3, Duquesne 0 – Natalie Hozak led with 19 service points and six assists as the Lady Gators defeated host Duquesne in a Section 5-A match by the scores of 25-2, 25-8, and 25-15.
Caitlin Solan recorded 16 service points and Chelsea Kreinbrook added eight assists.
The Lady Gators will play in the California University of Pa. Tournament Saturday and then return to section play on Tuesday against Jefferson-Morgan.
Duquesne remains winless at 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Section 5-A.
Fort Cherry 3, California 0 – Fort Cherry handed California its first loss of the season with a Section 5-A victory. The game scores were 25-19, 25-19 and 25-15.
Dana Slavic led the Lady Trojans (1-1) with nine service points and 38 assists.
Next up on the California schedule is Burgettstown at home on Sept. 14.
Beth-Center 3, Burgettstown 0 – The Lady Bulldogs continued to win in Section 5-A with a road victory at Burgettstown. Beth-Center (2-0, 2-0) won by the scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-11.
Sarah Sckena led the attack with 13 kills. Courtney Kurowski had 21 service points with Lauren Kuntz taking care of the defense with eight digs.
Beth-Center returns to action Saturday at the California University of Pa. Tournament.
Belle Vernon 3, Uniontown 1 – The home team gave it good run, but the visiting Lady Leopards managed to hold on for the Section 5-AA win in four sets. Belle Vernon won the first two, 25-15 and 28-26, dropped the third set, 27-25, before closing the match, 25-21.
Kelly Palya had 18 kills and nine assists for Uniontown (0-2, 0-3) with Bethany Vekkelli strong at the net with 10 kills. Marissa Voytek added six kills to the Uniontown effort at the net.
Boys soccer
Baldwin 11, Albert Gallatin 0 – Shane Cisko recorded a hat trick for Baldwin as the Highlanders blanked the Albert Gallatin in a Section 4-AAA match.
Baldwin led 4-0 at the half before erupting for eight second-half goals.
Jimmy Young was in at goalkeeper for AG and he posted 16 saves. Albert Gallatin totaled six shots on goal. Albert Gallatin will host Trinity on Monday in non-section play.
