Stoner’s hat trick keys Lady Raiders’ win Stephanie Stoner’s hat trick in the second half, including the winning goal with 31/2 minutes remaining in the game, lifted Waynesburg Central girl’s soccer team to a 4-3 home victory Saturday in the Section 1-AA season opener against visiting Geibel Catholic.
The Lady Raiders’ Shea Zwerver scored the only goal of the first half. Stoner scored her first goal early in the second half, but goals by the Lady Gators’ Kaitlyn Fagan and Liz Sunseri tied the game.
Stoner put Waynesburg Central (1-1, 1-3) ahead, 3-2, though Sunseri’s second goal of the game drew Geibel Catholic (0-1, 0-2) into a 3-3 tie.
The Lady Gators host Southmoreland Monday at 4 p.m. in Geibel’s section home opener.
Boys soccer
Brownsville 4, Beth-Center 3, OT – Mike Anderson scored in the second overtime period off a Bert Charnovich pass to give the Falcons a non-section home victory over the Bulldogs. The wins evens the season mark for Brownsville at 1-1.
Beth-Center scored the first two goals of the game, the first on an own goal and the other by Chase Bedillion. Brandon Granato cut the Falcons’ deficit in half with only 31 seconds remaining in the half, converting a Ted Knisely pass.
Brownsville pulled ahead with a pair of goals early and late in the second half. Kevin Rapsack finished a Granato pass into the back of the net at 31:22, and Jeremy Yothers’ goal from Ron Mounts’ pass put the Falcons ahead at 3:52.
Beth-Center tied the game less than a minute later on Ben Sakel’s goal.
Brownsville peppered the Beth-Center net with 20 shots. The Bulldogs put 12 shots on Josh Roberts with the Brownsville netminder turning aside 10 shots.
College baseball
Penn State-Fayette 3, CCAC-Boyce 2; CCAC-Boyce 1, Penn State-Fayette 0 – The Roaring Lions split a doubleheader with visiting CCAC-Boyce, scoring a timely run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game to avoid a sweep.
Penn State-Fayette (4-3) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning in the first game, but the visitors scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game.
Justin Corso (1-0) came on in relief in the sixth inning, holding CCAC-Boyce at bay to set up the final inning heroics by Phil Gratchic. The Geibel Catholic graduate lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Corey Watkins home with the deciding run.
Gratchic doubled earlier in the game while Jamie Kowalczyk belted out a pair of singles.
Dan Iorio’s persistence paid off with a victory in the second game after being on the losing end in the opener. The Roaring Lions’ Bryan Dunn struck out 10 and walked two, but the only run he allowed was all the visitors needed.
Justin McGuigan singled with one out. He moved to second on a walk and to third on a passed ball. McGuigan scored on Mark Lombardi’s single.
Earl Gilbert doubled for the Roaring Lions while Corey Watkins had a pair of singles.
Women’s volleyball
Waynesburg 3, Wilmington 0; Mt. Union 3, Waynesburg 2; Wittenberg 3, Waynesburg 0 – The Yellow Jackets started the day in the Wittenberg Tournament on a winning note, but dropped the last two matches of the day.
Waynesburg defeated Wilmington 30-10, 30-19, and 30-25. Brittany Morrow scored 13 kills, Lauren Freeman had 13 digs and Katie Beall distributed 33 assists.
The Yellow Jackets (1-6) took Mt. Union to five sets, losing the first, 30-27, winning the next two, 30-25 and 30-26, and dropping the final two, 30-27 and 15-12. Kimberly Wilson had a strong match with 18 kills and 19 digs.
Teia Suder was strong at the net with 17 kills while Freeman had another strong defensive game with 19 digs. Beall finished with 55 assists.
The host team swept past Waynesburg in the final match of the day, 30-28, 30-14 and 30-10. Morrow had seven kills and 12 digs. Katie Beall had 22 assists.
Boys cross country
Red, White, and Blue Invitational – Connellsville finished sixth and Laurel Highlands was eighth in the Red, White and Blue Cross Country Invitational held at Schenley Park.
The Falcons’ Kenny King was third overall in a time of 16:16. Other Connellsville finishers included Brad Showman (25, 17:06), Wade Schnorr (39, 17:26), Nick Vinoverski (65, 17:54), Joe Villanueva (111, 18:37), Seth Weible (129, 19:04) and Arlo Helms (135, 19:16).
Jeff Palya led the Mustangs home in 16th place with a time of 16:54.
The rest of the finishers were Ben Shinsky (21, 17:02), Larry Brink (35, 17:19), Jay Cronin (97, 18:21), Ryan Thorn (98, 18:22), Christian Evans (137, 19:20) and Dan Stefancin (167, 20:37).
North Hills won the team championship with the Indians’ Josh Eddy winning in 15:52. North Allegheny’s Max Brown was second in 16:05.
Girls cross country
Red, White, and Blue Invitational – Laurel Highlands finished 20th with Rachel Perry leading the way in 54th place in a time of 21:31. Other Fillies finishers included Sarah Workman (74, 22:07), Sara Slampak (135, 24:43), Erin Swentosky (136, 24:43), Tanisha Parker (143, 25:16), Leah Teets (152, 26:04), and Kaitlin Schuessler (155, 26:28).
