Stringer gets 3-year extension at Rutgers

2 min read

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) – C. Vivian Stringer, A Fayette County native and German Township High School graduate, has signed a three-year contract extension that will keep her as the women’s basketball coach at Rutgers through the 2007-2008 season. “Coach Stringer’s record speaks for itself,” athletic director Robert E. Mulcahy said. “She has great credibility in the women’s basketball world and has run a first-class program. Her selection to the Olympic coaching staff was a perfect reflection of the esteem with which she is held.”

The new package will give Stringer a base salary of $185,100, and her total compensation will be $455,000 annually when summer camps and other perks are included. The contract also has incentives that can increase her pay.

Stringer has posted a 695-239 record in 32 seasons, including a 175-104 mark in nine years at Rutgers. She is the fourth-winningest coach in women’s college basketball history.

A member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, she is the only coach, men’s or women’s, to lead three different schools to the NCAA Tournament Final Four. She took Cheyney in 1982, Iowa in 1993 and Rutgers in 2000.

Stringer’s teams have earned berths in 17 NCAA tournaments, advancing six times to the regional final (1982, 1987, 1988, 1993, 1999, 2000), three times to the final four (1982, 1993, 2000) and once to the national championship game (1982).

Rutgers has gone to six NCAA tournaments under Stringer, including last season when an injury-riddled team posted a 21-12 record.

“I am very happy that we were able to work out this contract extension to keep me here at Rutgers University,” Stringer said in a statement released late Tuesday. “I am looking forward to many more years of success with the Scarlet Knights. I see nothing but great things on the horizon for our program in the years to come.”

Stringer served as an assistant coach for the gold medal U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team this past summer.
