Red Raider golfers, Mustang soccer team pull upsets The Uniontown boys’ golf team put one in the win column as the Red Raiders shocked Mount Pleasant 179-189 in a Division I, Section 2 match on Thursday at Duck Hollow G.C.
“It feels pretty good,” said Uniontown coach Aaron Scott of his first victory of the season. “I knew that we had a chance to beat them.”
The Red Raiders had three golfers shoot rounds under 40 as David Bobish led the way with a 37 and medallist honors.
Teammates Seth Rockwell and Josh Miller tied for the second spot and Mount Pleasant’s Josh Coccagna and Anthony Prailey rounded out the top three with rounds of 41.
Mapletown 187, California 218 – The Maples bounced back from a non-section loss against Laurel Highlands on Wednesday and they cruised to an easy Division II, Section 8 victory over California on the front nine at Rohanna’s G.C.
Mapletown had four golfers under 40 with Jesse Boord setting the pace with a 2-over par 35.
Ethan Kovach finished in second with a 36 and Cory Dillinger and California’s Josh Saxe tied for the third spot with rounds of 37.
Josh Saxe carded the low round for California with a 37.
California remains winless at 0-5 in the section and 0-6 overall.
Laurel Highlands 195, Brownsville 212 – Chris Bonchosky shot a 2-over par round of 37 as the Mustangs took sole possession of first place in Division I, Section 2 golf action.
“I figured the match was going to be a closer than it was because Brownsville has been playing well,” said LH coach Don Crawford.
Laurel Highlands rounded out the top three golfers as Santino Marchitello was one stroke off the pace and Matt Hoover carded a 39.
Ryan Bashour and Ron Jones shot low rounds of 40 for Brownsville, while Bryce Conners and Ron White carded rounds of 40 and 41.
“Overall, we’ve been playing very good as a team and that’s why we’re winning,” Crawford said. “They are all going out and trying to do their parts.”
The Mustangs are the only team in the section with one loss as they sit at 6-1 and 9-2 overall, while Brownsville is 4-3 in the section and 5-4 overall.
Waynesburg Central 179, Albert Gallatin 189 – Waynesburg’s Zack Schloemer, Aaron Pyle, Anthony Calvario and Albert Gallatin’s Drew Callahan tied for medallist honors, but it was the Raiders that came through in the end as they defeated AG by 10 strokes in Division I, Section 2 action.
Danny Cross carded his best round of the year for Waynesburg as he and teammate A.J. Bertovich shot rounds of 37, while Tommy Rohanna posted a round of 39.
The Colonials’ Cory Moore and Brett DeDominic carded 38s, while Kevin Uglik and Tom Corazzi shot rounds of39 and 41.
Waynesburg Central (4-4, 6-5) is back in action on Tuesday at Belle Vernon, while Albert Gallatin (2-6, 3-6) visits Jefferson-Morgan on Sept. 22 at 3:30 p.m.
Laurel Highlands 185, Mapletown 228 – Matt Hoover, Bruce Burish and Chris Bonchosky shared medallist honors with rounds of 36 as Laurel Highlands defeated Mapletown in a non-section match-up on Wednesday at Duck Hollow G.C.
Zach Cumberland shot the low round for the Maples with a 42.
Geibel Catholic 193, Charleroi 229 – The Gators enjoyed a bit of home cooking, easily defeating the Cougars at Pleasant Valley Country Club for a Division II, Section 8 victory.
Geibel Catholic only counted one score over 40 with freshman Edward Spotts leading the way with a 1-over-par 36. Philip Lucostic shot a 37 with James McGrath and Erio Vignali both carding 39. Zack Bell’s 42 closed the scoring.
Dom Marozza had a good round for the Cougars with a 37. Joe Sabo finished with a 44 and Brody Carcella had a 46.
Carmichaels 230, Frazier 243 – Jamie Bandish finished with medallist honors and a low round of 37 as Carmichaels clipped Frazier by 13 strokes in a non-section match at Carmichaels G.C. on Thursday.
Teammate Dan Lasko and Frazier’s Brian Null finished six strokes behind the leader, while Frazier’s Jeff Adams and Marcus Wingrove finished in third place with rounds of 47 on the front nine at Carmichaels G.C.
Boys’ soccer
Laurel Highlands 3, Indiana 2, OT – Greg Hogan scored the winning goal at 4:03 in the first overtime on an assist from Jerrett Pickins as Laurel Highlands handed Indiana it’s first loss in Section 1-AA.
“This was a great win,” said LH coach Brad Takach. “The two teams are so evenly matched. It was from one end of the field to the other.”
Nick Midlik literally kicked off the scoring at the 24:29 mark in the first half on an unassisted goal.
Indiana’s Jay Swope rallied back six minutes later with his first of two goals.
Swope netted the first goal of the second half and Danny Kooser sent the game into overtime with 25 ticks left in regulation on an unassisted goal.
“It was a hard-fought game on both sides,” Takach said. “We’ve been playing each other in different leagues and we trade wins back and forth, so it’s definitely sweet to win against them.”
Tyler Foreman was in at goalkeeper for the Mustangs and he posted four saves. Adam Al-Hadadshi also had four saves for Indiana.
The Mustangs (3-2, 2-1) visit Mount Pleasant in a section match on Saturday.
Indiana sits and 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the section.
Girls’ Volleyball
Belle Vernon 3, Brownsville 0 – Belle Vernon handed Brownsville it’s fifth loss overall as they defeated the Lady Falcons in a non-section match.
The game scores were 25-13, 25-9 and 26-24.
Jessica Robaugh led with seven service points and four digs, while Maggie Gratchic, Nicole Williams and Bethany Jurczak added three service points.
In the junior varsity game, Belle Vernon defeated Brownsville by the scores of 25-23, 25-12 and 15-9.
Derry 3, Uniontown 1 – Derry Area handed Uniontown its fourth Section 5-AA loss on Thursday at Uniontown.
Uniontown won the second game by the score of 25-22, but Derry claimed the other three sets by the scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-16.
Kelly Palya led with nine kills and Bethany Vekkelli had six kills.
Teammate Lauren Wagner tallied four blocks.
In the junior varsity match, Derry won 25-13 and 25-9.
Frazier 3, Carmichaels 0 – Frazier continues to roll in Section 6-A as they blanked Carmichaels 25-8, 25-5 and 25-13.
Katey Oldham led with 21 service points, while Brooke Caron had seven service points and Holly Smith added five kills.
Fort Cherry 3, Beth-Center 0 – Fort Cherry won by the scores of 25-14, 26-24 and 25-22 as they handed Beth-Center its first Section 5-A loss on Thursday.
Leading the Lady Bulldogs were Chelsea Stotka with 17 service points.
Courtney Kurowski recorded eight kills and Amanda Higinbotham added six blocks.
California 3, Chartiers-Houston 1 – Dana Slavic had the hot hand for California as she had 27 service points and 45 assists en route to a Section 5-A victory over Chartiers-Houston.
Kellie Porter added 18 kills for the Lady Trojans (2-2, 3-3).
Haley Miller, Stephanie Kelly and Amanda Myers each had seven kills.
In the junior varsity game, Chartiers won 2-1 (25-16, 25-14 and 16-14).
Geibel Catholic 3, North Catholic 1 – Chelsea Kreinbrook had 13 service points and 22 assists en route to a Section 6-A victory at North Catholic.
The Lady Gators won by the scores of 26-24, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-14.
Natalie Hozak totaled 11 service points and eight kills, while Caitlin Solan added seven kills.
Geibel swept the junior varsity game 25-20 and 25-12.
Women’s tennis
California (Pa.) 9, West Virginia Wesleyan 0 – The Vulcans breezed past their non-conference foe, not dropping a set in the shutout victory. California improves to 4-1.
Linda Escobedo needed a first-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, but held on to win the closest singles match of the day. Olga Gonzalez dropped only two games at No. 2 singles, Jess Brown lost only one at No. 3, and Whitney Laurien lost seven games to win at No. 4 singles. Daniella Zevallos won at No. 5 singles by losing only four games, and Brownsville graduate Gina Pelehac defeated Cara Group, 6-1, 6-3, to take No. 6 singles.
Pelehac joined forces with Zevallos to win No. 2 doubles, 8-2. Escobedo and Gonzalez swept to an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles, and Laurien and Andra Preda completed the shutout with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
Waynesburg 6, Bethany 3 – Waynesburg picked up victories in three singles matches and three doubles matches as they defeated Bethany at home.
Katie Kravits defeated Hillary Norman in the second singles match, while Rebecca Greene downed Carissa Moore in the fifth singles match.
Sara DePiano claimed the sixth singles match 7-5, 6-2 over Ali Viveros.
The Yellow Jackets swept the doubles matches as the team of Mindy Hall and Kravits defeated Katie Navarra and Norman.
In the second doubles match, Beth Conlon and Jennifer Knight defeated Lindsy Caparese and August Gardner and the team of Greene and DePiano defeated Moore and Viveros in the final match.
Waynesburg’s overall record is 2-3.
College baseball
Westmoreland C.C.C. 9, Penn State-Fayette 5 – Justin Pennavaria earned the win in relief as Westmoreland County Community College defeated Penn State-Fayette (8-4, 7-4, 4-0).
Josh Null (1-1) came away with the loss. He worked five and two-thirds innings, allowed 10 hits, struck out four and walked one.
Jamie Kowalczyk tripled for the Roaring Lions and Ryan Guthrie doubled.
Corey Watkins, Phil Gratchic, Justin Corso and Guthrie each had two hits.
Men’s soccer
Westminster 5, Waynesburg 0 – Waynesburg was shut out in its PAC opener by unbeaten Westminster. Reigning PAC player of the week Michael Wilson was held to only one shot by the Titans, who scored three first-half goals.
Freshman Chris DeAngelis was the only Yellow Jacket to (3-3) attempt multiple shots.
Freshman Camillo DiLorenzo and senior Andrew Fencil split time in goal for Waynesburg.
DiLorenzo stopped four of eight shots in 66 minutes, while Fencil finished the game and allowed the final goal.
