Albert Gallatin golfers defeat Uniontown, 205-206 The Albert Gallatin Colonials relied on steady play from their six golfers to offset Uniontown’s David Bobish turning in the low score with a two-over par round of 37, resulting in a 205-206 win Tuesday.
Albert Gallatin’s Kevin Uglik turned in a 39.
There was a four-way tie for third place as Albert Gallatin’s Drew Callahan, Corazzi and Uniontown’s Nick Meucci and Seth Rockwell fired rounds of 41.
“We had steady play today,” Bernie Wydo said. “That’s what we need more of.”
With the golf season coming to a close, AG (3-6, 4-6) isn’t ready to hang up the clubs just yet.
“We’re looking at bumping some of the top teams off to have a successful season,” Wydo said.
The Colonials are on the road at 3 p.m. today in an exhibition match at Greene County C.C. against Jefferson-Morgan.
The Red Raiders (1-7, 1-8) hope to put another one in the win column as they host Brownsville at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Duck Hollow G.C.
Brownsville 209, Belle Vernon 217 – Ryan Bashour and Bryce Conners shared medallist honors with 2-over par rounds of 39, as Brownsville defeated Belle Vernon in a Division I, Section 2 match at Carmichaels G.C.
“It was a big win for us,” said Brownsville coach Chris McManus. “We’re tied for second place, but beat Belle Vernon twice outright.”
Marcus Wilson fired the low round for Belle Vernon with a 42, and there was a four-way tie for third place as BV’s Jason Weslager and Joe Pirilla shot 43s as well as Brownsville’s Ron Jones and Ron White.
“Our guys got off to a slow start, but after the fourth hole, we picked it up,” McManus said. “At the end, my top four guys beat their top four guys.”
The Falcons (5-3, 6-4) visit Uniontown Thursday at Duck Hollow.
Jefferson-Morgan 219, California 242 – Chad Kokoska carded a 2-under par 36 as Jefferson-Morgan cruised to an easy Division II, Section 8 victory over California at Carmichaels G.C.
Jefferson’s Justin Hughes finished with a 4-over par round of 41, while Matt Kokoska and California’s Josh Saxe tied with 43s.
The Rockets (4-2, 6-3) are back in action today at home in an exhibition match against Albert Gallatin.
Geibel Catholic 201, Monessen 230 – The Gators continue their unbeaten streak at nine victories overall as they cruised to an easy 29-stroke victory over Monessen at home.
James McGrath was one stroke away from shooting even par on the front nine at Pleasant Valley C.C., as he fired in a low round of 35.
Teammate Philip Lucostic finished with a 37, and Erio Vignali shot a 40 to finish third.
Scott Galilei had the low round for the Greyhounds with a 43.
The Gators (6-0, 9-0) are back in action on Thursday with a tough section match against Mapletown at Rohanna’s G.C.
Laurel Highlands 199, Mount Pleasant 212 – Bruce Burish took medallist honors with a 3-over par 39, as Laurel Highlands defeated host Mount Pleasant on the front nine at Norvelt G.C.
“It was a big match for us because Mount Pleasant is always tough on their home course,” said LH coach Don Crawford. “This keeps us in first place.”
Teammate Matt Hoover carded a 39 for sole-possession of second place and Jeremy Boskovitch and Mount Pleasant’s Josh Coccagna tied for third place with rounds of 40.
Two LH golfers, along with one Viking golfer tied for the third spot as Santino Marchitello, Andrew Fike and Mount Pleasant’s Louis Hout shot rounds of 41.
“As long as we continue to win, we control our own destiny,” Crawford said.
The Mustangs (7-1, 11-2) will be put to the test on Thursday as they host Connellsville, the only section team to hand LH a loss this season. The match is at 2 p.m. at Duck Hollow.
Southmoreland 217, Frazier 245 – Southmoreland finished 1-2-3 as Jason Sinsley led with a low round of 40 and Josh Hodgkiss and Nick Hoburn shot 42 and 43, respectively.
Frazier’s Marcus Wingrove and Jeff Adams carded a 46 and 47, respectively.
The Scotties are 4-3 in the section, and the Commodores are looking for their first win at 0-7.
Waynesburg Central 201, Connellsville 217 – The Raiders moved a game above .500 in the Division I, Section 2 standings with a road victory at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Waynesburg improves to 5-4 in the section and 8-5 overall while the Falcons slip to 4-5 in the section and 4-6 overall.
Aaron Pyle was the low man for the Raiders with a 4-over-par 38. Zack Schloemer was a shot behind with A.J. Bertovich and Anthony Calverio both carding 41. Tommy Rohanna closed the scoring rounds with a 42.
Connellsville’s Nathan Pritts shared medallist honors with a 38. Jonathan Luczka carded a 39. Craig White had a 44, Nick Stillwagon a 46 and Cody Boors finished with 50.
Greensburg C.C. 206, Beth-Center 223 – The Bulldogs had problems with the Division II, Section 2-leading Centurions again, dropping a key match at Nemacolin Country Club. Greensburg C.C. (10-1) solidified its spot atop the standings with an 8-0 record. Beth-Center drops to 4-3 in the section and 6-3 overall.
Roger Myers and Zac Nicola shared the low score for Beth-Center at 5-over-par 43. Zach Catalina and Matt Rohrer both carded 45 with Mike Celaschi rounding out the scoring with a 47.
Nick Milito and Rich Tiberio shared medallist honors for the Centurions with 2-over-par 40. Andy Cala, Zach Metcalf and Marc Perez all shot 42.
Mapletown 186, Charleroi 212 – The Maples kept pace with Geibel Catholic in the Division II, Section 8 standings with an easy home victory at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
Jesse Boord led the Maples (4-1, 7-3) with a 2-over-par 35. Joel Kovach shot a 36 and Zach Cumberland finished with a 37. Don Hilenbrant carded a 38 and Ethan Kovach rounded out the scoring with a 40.
Don Marozza was the low man for the Cougars with a 38. Brody Carcella, Brad DiPaola and Chad Pappasergi all shot 43 for Charleroi.
Boys’ cross country
Uniontown 16, West Mifflin 47 – The Uniontown boys cross country team remains undefeated at 4-0 in Section 2-AAA as it claimed nine of the top 10 finishes at home against West Mifflin.
Kevin Monaghan was first to cross the finish line at Penn State Fayette with a time of 18:22.
Aaron Moyer finished just 13 seconds behind and Derek Thomas rounded out the top three finishers for Uniontown with a time of 19:45.
West Mifflin’s only top ten finish was Jeremy Vargo who finished fifth with a time of 19:47.
The Red Raiders’ John O’Neil came in sixth at 20:34, while Andy Naymick (20:39) and Mark Dzara (20:54) finished ninth and tenth.
Uniontown prepares for the A.J. Everhart Invitational on Saturday at Penn State-Fayette with the first races beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Frazier 27, McGuffey 28; Frazier 26, Fort Cherry 29; Fort Cherry 27, McGuffey 28 – The visiting Commodores weren’t able to take the top two spots from McGuffey or Fort Cherry, the host team, in the Section 3-AA triangular, but Frazier grabbed the next four places to secure a pair of close wins.
McGuffey’s Jeff Weiss posted a course-record-time of 15:30, over four minutes ahead of Fort Cherry’s Matt Miller. The Highlanders’ Dan McCahier was third overall with the Rangers’ Brian Pleskovic fourth.
The string of Commodores began with Todd Feeney finishing in 20:17. Derek Miller trailed by four seconds with Matthew Carson on his heels. Kenny Miller was next in 20:30. Tim Hela secured the win in 12th place overall with a time of 21:51.
Frazier (2-2, 3-3) will compete in the A.J. Everhart Invitational Saturday morning.
Brownsville 25, Burgettstown 31; Chartiers-Houston 23, Brownsville 32; Chartiers-Houston 21, Burgettstown 35 – The Brownsville boys cross country team pulled out a victory over Burgettstown but lost to Chartiers-Houston in a tri-meet on Tuesday at Brownsville.
In the overall results, Chartiers-Houston finished 1-2-3, as Peter Humbert crossed the finish line first with a time of 17:50.
Teammate Buddy Rose finished almost a full three minutes behind with a time of 21:27, and Steve Trefnoff finished third (21:46).
Burgettstown’s Josh Lounder secured fourth place as he crossed the finish line in 22:44.
Brownsville runners won four of the last six spots as Josh Stalvey led the way with a time of 22:46, Joey Franks came in seventh at 23:27, Lawrence Rockwell finished eighth in 23:58 and Luke Stroup claimed tenth place with a time of 24:54.
The Falcons (2-2) will participate in the A.J. Everhart Invitational on Saturday at Penn State-Fayette.
Girls’ cross country
Uniontown 23, West Mifflin 34 – The Uniontown girls cross-country team had a little tougher time against the West Mifflin girls team, however they pulled away with a Section 2-AAA victory.
West Mifflin’s Mindy Argyle finished first with at time of 23:45.
Uniontown grabbed the next four places, as B.J. Brame finished second (24:11), Stacy Lloyd third (24:17), Michelle Naymick finished fourth (24:38) and Candace Adams secured fifth place (24:57).
West Mifflin claimed the next three finishes with Stephanie Vargo crossing the line at 26:32, Missy Conrad finished sixth at 26:59 and Rachel Potoscak finished seventh in 27:12.
Uniontown’s Ellen Williams secured the ninth spot as she crossed the line at 27:25.
The Lady Red Raiders (5-1, 3-0) host the A.J. Everhart Invitational on Saturday.
Frazier 25, McGuffey 30; Fort Cherry 27, Frazier 28; Fort Cherry 24, McGuffey 31 – Aly Brown won the race in 21:41, but the Lady Commodores’ Rebecca Leary was only 15 seconds behind in the Section 3-AA triangular at Fort Cherry.
Erin Sizemore was fifth overall in a time of 25:51. Heather Priester was sixth in 26:16. Erica Sendek and Jessica Hudik finished 14 seconds apart in 11th and 12th place.
Brownsville 17, Burgettstown 44, Brownsville 21, Chartiers-Houston 40; Chartiers-Houston 25, Burgettstown 36 – Erica Coffey took home first place with a time of 23:25 in the overall results for Brownsville, as they defeated Burgettstown and Chartiers-Houston in a tri-meet on Tuesday at home.
Chartiers-Houston’s Elissa Chappel finished second in 24:09 and Brownsville’s Melissa Pankratz finished in third place with a time of 24:25.
Other Lady Falcon top ten finishes include Amber Jackson (4th, 25:53), Rebecca Bruschi (7th, 27:30), Brittany Merritt (eighth, 27:30) and Lisa Fraley finished (10th 30:36).
The Lady Falcons are undefeated at 4-0. They will participate in the Uniontown A.J. Everhart Invitational on Saturday.
Girls’ tennis
Connellsville 5, Greensburg Salem 0 – The Connellsville girls tennis team made it a clean sweep, making quick work of Greensburg Salem in a non-section match at home.
“It’s always nice to get a win,” said Connellsville coach Don Campbell. “There are a lot of positives.”
Lauren Hartz kicked things off in the No. 1 singles match, as she defeated Noelle Harrold, 6-4 and 6-2.
In the second and third singles matches, Lindsey Weimer and Megan Parsons blanked their opponents in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Falcons continued to roll in the doubles matches as the team of Miranda Hughes and Amy Lucas defeated Ali Heckman and Liz Semed, 6-1, 6-0, and Amanda Stout and Kristen Pletcher defeated Anna Jacobsen and Leah Manley, 6-1 and 6-1.
Coming off a tough loss to Hempfield, Campbell said, “For the girls to come back after losing, that always picks you up. We’re hitting the ball well and that’s the most important thing.”
Next up on the Connellsville schedule is Trinity at 3:30 p.m. today at Washington Park.
Boys’ soccer
Laurel Highlands 3, Derry Area 0 – It took a while for the Laurel Highlands boys soccer team to get going, but once it did, it was no looking back as they defeated Derry Area on the road in Section 1-AA action.
Danny Kooser got LH on the scoreboard on an assist from E.J. Regula at the 2:15 mark in the first half.
“It was a nice section win for us,” said LH coach Brad Takach. “We didn’t play as well as we should have. We didn’t capitalize on all of the scoring opportunities that we had.”
Greg Hogan came in with The Mustangs second goal at the 35:40 mark in the second half and Jerrett Pickens scored LH’s final goal on an assist by Cory Borland with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Yough will visit LH on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Brownsville 4, Carmichaels 0 – John Marcolini and Kevin Rapsack each scored a goal and assisted on another as Brownsville pitched a shutout over Carmichaels in a Section 5-AA soccer match.
Rapsack scored the first goal on the assist from Marcolini, Brandon Grenato netted Brownsville’s second goal on the assist from Rapsack and Jeremy Yothers scored Brownsville’s third goal of the first half on an assist from Mike Anderson.
The Falcons (2-4, 1-3) had 24 shots on goal compared to Carmichaels’ 16.
In at goal for Brownsville was Josh Roberts and he had 16 saves.
Waynesburg Central visits Brownsville on Thursday.
Baldwin 7, Uniontown 0 – Baldwin raced out to an early lead and never looked back as they blanked Uniontown at home in a Section 4-AAA match.
The score was 5-0 at the end of the half.
The Red Raiders (1-5) visit Albert Gallatin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Girls’ volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – Canon-McMillan won in straight sets over Section 2-AAA host Laurel Highlands.
Game scores were 25-23, 25-17 and 25-9.
The Fillies (2-2) begin a two-game road trip today at Yough and Thursday at Connellsville.
Beth-Center 3, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Chelsea Stotka recorded a game-high 21 service points en route to a 3-0 shutout over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 5-A match on the road.
Courtney Kurowski added nine kills and five blocks.
The junior varsity girls team won 2-0.
The Lady Bulldogs (4-1, 4-2) play Thursday against California at home.
Elizabeth-Forward 3, Brownsville 0 – The Lady Warriors swept through their Section 5-AA home match, defeating the Lady Falcons, 25-7, 25-10, and 25-11. Nicole Williams and Maggie Grahek both had two service points. Brownsville falls to 0-6 in the section and 0-6 overall.
Frazier 3, Duquesne 0 – The Lady Commodores dropped only 17 points for an easy Section 6-A home victory. Frazier won the by the scores of 25-1, 25-4 and 25-12. Brooke Carson scored 15 service points and Merritt Tidholm added 14.
Frazier (4-0, 5-0) hosts a big section match Thursday when the Lady Commodores entertain Jefferson-Morgan.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Mapletown 0 – Jefferson-Morgan cruised to an easy 3-0 victory over Mapletown in a Section 6-A match.
The game scores were 25-8, 25-9 and 25-11.
The Lady Maples (1-4, 1-2) visit Uniontown today. J-M is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the section.
The Lady Rockets won the junior varsity match, 2-0.
Women’s volleyball
California (Pa.) 3, Slippery Rock 1 – California University of Pa. women’s volleyball team extended its record to 10-3 overall as it defeated Slippery Rock Tuesday.
Katie Barker led Cal with 19 kills and 23 digs, and Aimee Helbig had four kills, 55 assists and three services aces.
Beth-Center graduate Samantha Slagle had 11 kills and 14 digs as well as teammate Jessica Brown.
The Vulcans visit Slippery Rock in a cross-over tournament this weekend.
College baseball
Penn State-Fayette 6-6, Penn State-Beaver 2-6 – The Penn State-Fayette men’s baseball team came away from Penn State-Beaver with a split in a doubleheader Tuesday.
The first game went extra innings, and the Roaring Lions took over in the eighth, as Ryan Guthrie had a two-out single that drove in a run, Jamie Kowalczyk drove in two and Phil Gratchic singled to score a run.
Winning pitcher Josh Null (2-1) fanned 14 batters over eight innings. He allowed two earned runs and walked five.
Jason Cooney came away with the loss.
Paul Metz slapped a solo home run for Penn State-Fayette.
In the second game, Fayette came up short as Penn State-Beaver won in seven innings.
Pat Ringel recorded the win and Gratchic (1-1) went on record as the losing pitcher.
Brian Dunn homered for the Roaring Lions, and Guthrie added a double as their only extra base hits.
Matt Fanase started the game, worked six innings, allowed five earned runs, struck out three and walked one batter.
Today Penn State meets Penn State-McKeesport.
