Mario’s takes series lead over Bud Murphy’s
Mario’s youngster Ryan Robowski accepted a tough mission for Wednesday’s Game Three against Bud Murphy’s: keep Bud Murphy’s offense in check. Robowski did just that, allowing only three runs – all the in fifth inning off a Kevin Hiles three-run homer.
In turn, Robowski’s teammates thanked him with a huge show of support.
Mario’s gave its young southpaw a lead to work with after scoring four second-inning runs, and never looked back in a 13-3 rout of Bud Murphy’s.
In the seventh inning, Mario’s secured a 2-1 series lead when Jim Kubina, Scott Vansickle and Chris McManus eached belted home runs.
“I wouldn’t say that was completely unexpected, cause these guys can hit,” Mario’s coach Lou Pasquale said. “Top to bottom, anyone can put the ball out of the yard and hopefully we can keep rolling.”
The wheels got rolling for Mario’s in top of the second inning with four runs off Bud Murphy’s starter Matt Basinger.
John Harvey and Jared Lapkowicz led the inning off with a walk and single, respectively, and moved up 90 feet on Matt Chalfant’s sacrifice bunt.
Kubina, Bill Rouse and Vansickle notched consecutive singles, scoring three runs, while Rouse would later score when Corey Fox’s throw to second base skipped to the outfield.
“Kubina has really gotten his bat going and it’s nice to have Billy Rouse back in the lineup, because he just came back from his honeymoon,” Pasquale said.
Chalfant and Rouse returned to action in the fourth inning, as Chalfant led off with a single and Rouse reached on an error with one out. A sacrifice fly scored Chalfant from third and Jason Greene’s single scored Rouse for a 6-0 Mario’s lead.
Bud Murphy’s cut the lead in half during the bottom of the fifth inning.
Mark Riggin walked and and Brian Showman followed with a single. After Fox flew out to first base, Hiles drilled a three-run homer over the fence for Bud Murphy’s only runs.
Robowski finished off the inning, retiring both Richie Means and Brian Sankovich on fly outs to McManus in center field.
“I was impressed with Robowski on the hill,” Pasquale said. “It was a heck of a job for a 17-year-old to come out here and throw like that. He gave up the three runs, stuck with it and kept throwing strikes.”
After two more insurance runs in the sixth inning on a double by Harvey, Mario’s posted five runs in the seventh off of a couple two-run homers and a solo shot for the 13-3 final score.
Kubina hit a solo shot with one out over the left-center field fence, while Vansickle and McManus each delivered two-run home runs roughly over the same spot Kubina’s surpassed the outfield wall.
After the 10-run loss, Bud Murphy’s coach Tom Sankovich was quick to dish out credit to the Mario’s hitters, despite being unsatisfied with his own team’s performance.
“It was a pathetic performance for Bud Murphy’s and I give all the credit in the world to the Mario’s hitters,” Sankovich said. “They hit the ball and they hit the ball off of three different pitchers, but that’s also the most pitiful performance of a Bud Murphy’s baseball team in history since I’ve been here.”
Game four of the series takes place today in Leckrone at 5:45 p.m. In a must-win situation for Bud Murphy’s, ace Nick Damico will toe the mound looking to keep the season alive.
