Strikes and Spares

Fall bowling leagues revving up Why is it that when you come back from vacation, time picks up speed? I can’t believe this is the second week back from Nebraska already and with in just days the kids will be back in school. In the same respect, didn’t we just talk about the summer leagues starting up! Oh well, the tomatoes are slowing down, and the cantaloupes from my buddy Tom are all but finished, so it must be time for the fall leagues to get started.

Fairbank Bowling Center sent over information on the start of their leagues. Their Sunday Mixed starts on Sept. 11, Monday Women’s Aug. 29, Tuesday Men’s Sept. 6, Thursday Mixed Aug. 25, and the Saturday morning youth league starts on Sept. 10. If you have any questions about the leagues give Jim or Carolyn Matis a call and they will be happy to fill you in on the particulars.

Fairbank finished up their Parent-Kids League on Wednesday and they are sharing some inspiring scores. First off the lane is Alan Scabis, who commanded the pins with a 733. Next is Bobby Lovis with a 726 and Sam McVider tipped them over to the tune of 693. Drew Richards scored a daunting 660, followed by Mike Conner at 617. Not to be left out of the crowd is Haley Tolnai with a 215, 192, and 168 adding up to a 575. I understand this was an excellent set of scores for this bowler. Great bowling, Haley.

The leagues are shaping up pretty good at most of the bowling houses. Gudac Lanes says their Monday Night Women’s looks solid. The Tuesday Women are still looking for several bowlers and the Tuesday Men currently need a couple of bowlers. There are several other openings in different leagues, so it is well worth your call if you are trying to find a league.

Manor Lanes encourages everyone to contact their league secretary and inform them of their intent to play or not. Even if you are not going to bowl this season, your secretary needs this information to set up the league.

Manor Lanes reported a few of last week’s scores that we did not have a chance to view.

Sonny Yowler had a 299, finishing with a 661. Patty Kmetz dazzles us with a 618 and Danny Davis came off the lanes with a 279, concluding with a 717. John Buhovecky tipped the score sheets with 258, topping it off with 709.

In the Monday four-game format in the same house, Dave Show had a 255, 257/948. My man Ed Floyd rolled 265, 247/929 and Danny Davis joins this group with 245, 269/922. John Campbell, no stranger to this column, a 245. In the Tuesday Mix, Bob Sible shot a 111/629.

This week at Manor we see some of same bowling names pop up.

Sonny Yowler, as part of the Thursday Mix, rolled scores of 238, 236,260 to polish it off with a 734.

Lloyd Rockwell came in close behind with 248, 230/675. Finally, Patty Kmetz returns with 226, 233/617.

Our bowling history lesson: Into the Middle Ages, and later, bowling was popular in Germany. Many village dances, baptisms and other special occasions used bowling as a means of entertainment. The wealthy had bowling alleys on their estates and courtyards. Many of the palaces boasted a bowling alley so the lord of the manor could entertain his friends.

The lord of my manor just informed me it is time to start doing some real work.

Thank you for another great week.
