Carmichaels wins in overtime, 9-6

Logan Phillips split the uprights in overtime from 22 yards out on Carmichaels’ first offensive possession en route to a 9-6 victory over visiting Burgettstown Friday in non-conference high school football action. Phillips led both offensive categories with eight carries for 41 yards on the ground and was also quarterback Bob Virgili’s favorite target with three catches for 42 yards.

Virgili completed 10 of 13 passes for 105 yards.

After a scoreless three quarters, Carmichaels was first to strike at the 5:24 mark in the fourth quarter as sophomore tailback Cody Andrews scampered 18 yards followed by a failed extra-point attempt.

With just 45 seconds left in regulation, Brenden Bongiorni connected with Justin Lonchar for 21 yards and a score, followed by the second failed extra-point attempt of the night.

Bongiorni completed only 4 of 16 passes for 50 yards, but the Trojans made up for it on the ground as they rushed for 215 yards, led by Mike Majoris who just missed the century mark with 22 carries for 98 yards.

Overall, Burgettstown led in the statistical department as it combined for 265 yards in total offensive compared to Carmichaels’ 216. The Blue Devils also had 14 first downs compared to Carmichaels’ seven and had 10 less penalty yards.

Carmichaels takes to the road on Sept. 2 with a match-up against Bentworth.

Waynesburg Central 42, West Greene 20 – Troy Cree scored three touchdowns, highlighted by a 100-yard interception return and runs of six and one yard as Waynesburg Central rolled to an easy non-conference victory over host West Greene.

Cree’s 100-yard scamper was with 57 seconds left in the fourth quarter was icing on the cake as Waynesburg dominated with 288 yards on the ground, but failed to put any passing numbers on the board as junior quarterback Mitch Monas went 0-for-4 with an interception.

J.D. Higgins scored two rushing touchdowns of his own with runs of 20 and 10 yards. His 13-of-131 performance led all Raider rushers.

Other Waynesburg carriers included Cree (14-90), Scott Throckmorton (7-56) and J.L. Simpson (3-16).

Cody Miller led the West Greene charge with 20 carries for 59 yards and two touchdowns.

West Greene quarterback A.J. Wilson went 8-for-16 for 129 yards and a 14-yard score to Marcus Sims with 11:05 remaining in the first half.

Waynesburg totaled five penalties for 25 yards compared to no penalties for the Pioneers.

The Raiders (1-0) host Ford City Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Bentworth 28, Mapletown 27 – Joe Mucho and Travis Harff each found the end zone twice as Bentworth slid past Mapletown in non-conference action.

Harff completed 11 of 22 passes for 122 yards, but it was his fancy footwork that fueled the Bentworth offense with scores of three and one yard.

The 1-yard score came with 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, followed by a Nick Workmaster’s extra point for the victory.

The winning score was set up by a Lincoln Gibson’s 63-yard kickoff return after the Maples had just taken a 27-21 lead.

Brandon Geisel caught a 21-yard pass from Jon Caldwell with 48 seconds left, but the Maples missed the extra-point kick.

Mapletown dominated the running game with Ryan Geisel reaching the century mark with 24 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Caldwell was 5-for-11 with two interceptions and 54 yards.

Mapletown remains on the road with a visit to Chartiers-Houston Friday.

Thomas Jefferson 41, Belle Vernon 0 – Belle Vernon suffered a tough loss on the first night of the 2005 football season as Thomas Jefferson erupted for 41 points and held the Leopards scoreless.

Belle Vernon (0-1) returns home Sept. 2 to take on Peters Township with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Yough 37, Southmoreland 0 – Yough put together 37 points and held Southmoreland scoreless in Brian Pritts’ first game as head coach in a non-conference contest.

The Scotties hope to put one in the win column next week at home against Burrell.
