Volleyball Cal wins tournament
The California University of Pa. women’s volleyball squad opened the 2005 season in a grand way, sweeping through four matches over the weekend to win the Francis Marion University Tournament in Florence, S.C.
The Vulcans shut out Coker (30-18, 30-19, 33-31) and defeated Francis Marion, 30-26, 30-10, 21-30, 30-14, on Friday. California opened play Saturday morning with a shutout of St. Andrews (30-23, 30-18, 30-25) and capped an undefeated tournament with a 3-2 win over South Carolina-Aiken (30-19, 30-15, 29-31, 26-30, 15-8).
Senior setter Aimee Helbig paced the Vulcans with 159 assists, 40 digs, 14 kills, seven blocks and five service aces. Katie Barker led California with 58 kills and 75 digs while fellow senior Jessica Brown added 31 kills, 52 digs, six blocks and four service aces. Amanda Evans posted a team-high 16 blocks to go with 37 kills.
California returns home to Hamer Hall this weekend, hosting an eight-team tournament.
Auto racing
Mitchell claims 7th win
Richard Mitchell won for the seventh time this season, taking the checkered flag in the Napa NASCAR Super Late Model feature at Motordrome Speedway in Smithton.
Rick Miller finished second in the 35-lap race with Connellsville’s Bobby Henry third and Garry Wiltrout fourth.
George P. Nicola held off John Pribanich and Adam Kostelnik to win the Smail Pontiac GMC Modifieds. Frank Turek continued his dominance in the Subway Street Stocks, winning his second straight division championship title.
Vanderbilt’s Jeff Giles Jr. started the Yellow Book Charger 15-lap feature sixth, but worked his way to the lead in the third lap and then held off Tracy Keller for the win. Giles added to his division-leading total and won the Valvoline Hard Charger Award. Ed Dineen added to his division lead by winning the Advance Auto Parts American Flyers.
Rain forces cancellation
Wet weather forced the cancellation of racing at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex in Farmington and Pittburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.
Soccer
Cal loses opener
Bloomsburg defeated California University of Pa. women’s soccer team, 1-0, in the opening game of the Lady Raider Classic Saturday hosted by Shippensburg University. Bloomsburg’s Katie Armitage and Ashley Brucker broke free on Vulcans’ goaltender Hanna Spiegle in the 79th minute with Armitage passing to Brucker for the easy goal.
California mustered on six shots on Lady Bears goaltender Robin Gerber while Bloomsburg peppered 20 shots at the Vulcans.
California returns to action this afternoon with a game against Shippensburg at 10 a.m.

California traveled to Riverview for its season opener, but the home team made the trip an unpleasant one with a 21-14 non-conference victory.
