Steelers sign 22 first-and second-year free agents
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Matt Farrior, a former Florida inside linebacker and the brother of Steelers All-Pro linebacker James Farrior, is one of 22 first- and second-year free agents signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Among those also signing were offensive tackle Josh Burr, fullback Darryl Kennedy and safety Janssen Patten, all of whom were cut during the Steelers’ training camp last summer, and former Penn State center Joe Iorio. He spent the season on Tampa Bay’s practice squad.
Former Pitt linebacker Lewis Moore, who spent time in the Bears’ and Giants’ training camps last summer, also was signed, as was wide receiver Sam Simmons, who played in 11 games with the Dolphins in 2003 but was cut by Miami last summer.
Also added were fullback Travis Wilson, quarterback Jeff Krohn, wide receivers Chris Collins and Walter Young, tight end John Frieser, center Ben Claxton, offensive guard Lenny Vandermade, offensive tackle Ulish Booker, cornerback Vontez Duff, linebacker Dedrick Roper, defensive end Brandon Calton, defensive tackles Grant Bowman, Bob Dzvonick and Eric Taylor and punter Mike Barr.
Dzvonick, who played at Shaler High School near Pittsburgh, played for the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers last season.
Of the group, Farrior, Kennedy, Patten, Moore, Simmons, Wilson, Krohn, Collins, Frieser, Claxton, Vandermade, Booker, Calton, Dzvonick and Barr were assigned to NFL Europe.
Bowman, Duff, Roper, Taylor, Young, Collins and Vandermade each spent all or part of the season on the Steelers’ practice squad.
