Uniontown forced to forfiet one game
An administrative error cost the Uniontown boys basketball team an exhibition win over Waynesburg Central. The error involved attendance records. The records were improperly documented, which resulted in an ineligible player participating in two games for the Red Raiders. He played in Uniontown’s win over Waynesburg and in the Red Raiders’ Section 1-AAAA-opening loss to Norwin. Since Norwin beat the Red Raiders, no action was taken regarding that game.
Uniontown’s overall record drops from 14-5 to 13-6 due to the forfeit to Waynesburg. The Red Raiders’ 8-4 section record remains the same and is good enough to send them to the WPIAL playoffs, which are set to begin on Friday, Feb. 11
“The ineligibility is due to attendance, not because of poor grades,” Red Raiders basketball coach Rob Kezmarsky said. “We are sorry that this happened. As soon as we figured out that we had made a mistake, we called the WPIAL and reported it.”
“I apologize for the administrative error,” Uniontown Principal Pete Bozick said. “Unfortunately, taking care of this many students and this many athletes, errors happen. Luckily, we caught it when we did, for the sake of our sports team and our students. I called Larry Hanley at the WPIAL and informed him of the situation. He, in turn, instructed us to send letters to the two affected schools.”
Waynesburg Central’s overall record improves from 12-10 to 13-9 because of the forfeit win over Uniontown.
