Beth-Center boys upend Jefferson-Morgan Garrett Balas poured in a game-high 24 points on 10 field goals and two 3-pointers, as the Beth-Center boys basketball team upended Jefferson-Morgan 58-44 in non-section on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 14-5 lead and never looked back as they handed J-M it’s 18th loss overall.

Reggie Davis also contributed offensively with 17 points and a 3 of 5 performance from the foul line.

Josh Lawrence had the hot hand for J-M with 13 points, and Jarrod Moskola added 12.

Beth-Center closes the regular season on Friday at home against Chartiers-Houston and the Rockets travel to Mapletown for their final game on Friday.

Thomas Jefferson 73, Waynesburg Central 71 – It took four quarters and an overtime period, but in the end visiting Thomas Jefferson slid past Waynesburg Central in a Section 4-AAA match-up on Wednesday.

Ryan Brown led the way with 21 points for TJ, while Billy Arre scored 18 and Dom Decicco added 11 in a see-saw finish.

Waynesburg pulled even in the fourth, then Thomas Jefferson rallied and went ahead hitting key free throws down the stretch.

Nate Stoner led all scorers with 27 points and Anthony Bocchini added 12.

Girls’ basketball

Brownsville 49, Mapletown 38 – Laranda Issac lit up the scoreboard with 19 points en route to an 11-point victory on the road against Mapletown in non-section action.

Teammate Nicole Kerestine added 12 point and was a perfect 4 of 4 from the foul line.

Brittany Buckhalter led the Lady Maples with 16 points, including 6 of 10 from the charity stripe and Brittani Schock added 14 points.

Mapletown closes its season today on the road against Frazier (7:30 p.m.) and Mapletown hosts Jefferson-Morgan on Friday with tip-off at 6 p.m.

St. Joseph 63, Geibel Catholic 36 – St. Joseph kicked things off with a 26-point first-quarter as they rolled to an easy non-section victory over Geibel Catholic.

A trio of St. Joseph players scored in double digits with Betta Lerri leading the way with 21 points.

Katie Norris scored 17 points and Kelsey Hardaway added 11.

Freshman forward Samantha Hawk led the Lady Gators (11-11, 8-3) with eight points.

Geibel wraps up the regular season today at home against the Lady Trojans of California.

Women’s basketball

California (Pa.) 72, Shippensburg 58 – California’s 11th-ranked women’s team scored the first 20 points, including six each by Sara McKinney, Dani Mills and Kim Nowakowski on the way to a PSAC triumph over Shippensburg.

McKinney shared game-high scoring honors with 18 points and recorded her seventh double-double by adding a game-high 10 rebounds.

Mills finished with 17 points and Nowakowski added 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

The Vulcans’ defense held Shippensburg to a 21-for-49 performance from the field.

The defending national champion Vulcans complete the first half of its PSAC West schedule Saturday with a 3 p.m. game at Lock Haven.

Men’s basketball

California (Pa.) 51, Shippensburg 45 – California Boris Mesnager equaled his career-high with a game-high 22 points to lead the Vulcans to a come-from-behind victory over Shippensburg, which entered the game tied with Edinboro for first place in the PSAC West.

Cal’s defense was the story in the second half, holding the Raiders to just 14 point in 20 minutes.

Mesnager scored what proved to be the game-winning basket with 52 seconds left, but missed the free throw in trying to convert a conventional three-point play.

Cal had another missed front end of a 1-and-1 before Ruffin was fouled after a Shippensburg missed shot.

Ruffin drained both free throws with 16 seconds left to seal the win.

Wrestling

Sharon Duals Tournament – Albert Gallatin finished 3-2 overall last Saturday at the Sharon Duals Tournament. Rob Blosser (215) and Allen Myers (275) finished 5-0 on the day. Charlie Belch (171), Marc Brown (160) and Dave Bryson (145) were all 4-1 while Kevin Bella (189) finished 3-1. Brad Zitney (125) matched the team’s record for the day at 3-2.
