Illinois puts clamps on Indiana to remain unbeaten CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – James Augustine scored 16 points and Deron Williams had 11 assists to lead No. 1 Illinois to a 60-47 victory over Indiana on Sunday.

It was the lowest point total of the season for the Illini (23-0, 9-0 Big Ten), who should remain the unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press’ college basketball poll for a second straight week.

Illinois and No. 5 Boston College (20-0) are the only unbeatens remaining in Division I.

Williams was 0-for-7 from the field and scored only one point, a free throw with 2:15 left in the game.

Robert Vaden and D.J. White each scored 12 points for Indiana (10-10, 5-4), which played without leading scorer Bracey Wright, who missed the game because of an injured left ankle.

No. 2 North Carolina 81, Florida St. 60

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – North Carolina’s Rashad McCants scored 16 points, including a dunk that ignited a 25-6 run down the stretch.

Raymond Felton added 14 points for the Tar Heels (19-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who shot just 40 percent, but committed only nine turnovers for the second straight game.

Von Wafer had 14 points for Florida State (11-11, 3-6), which rallied from an 18-point first-half deficit to within 49-48 on Diego Romero’s 3-pointer with 14:16 left. The Tar Heels went up 74-54 as the Seminoles went scoreless for more than 7 minutes.

Clarion 82, IUP 78

Uniontown graduate Terrance Vaughns was one of three Clarion players to finish with 20 points Saturday night in the Golden Eagles’ double-overtime win over visiting Indiana (Pa.).

Vaughns hit 7-of-10 field goals, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 free throws in his 20-point performance. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists before fouling out.

Ryan Wells also scored 20 points for Clarion (14-6, 4-2) before fouling out. Michael Clarke didn’t foul out – he had four fouls – in his double-double performance of 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Ayyub Ali led Indiana (17-5, 3-3) with 28 points.

Women

Temple 75, Duquesne 53

PITTSBURGH – Kamesha Hairston had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 22 Temple over Duquesne.

Candice Dupree added 12 points and Cynthia Jordan scored 10 for the Lady Owls (18-3, 10-0 Atlantic 10), who won their 15th straight game.

Brittany Warren paced the Lady Dukes with a season-high 14 points. Aiga Bautre and Albert Gallatin graduate Loui Hall each added 13 for Duquesne (7-14, 2-8). Uniontown graduate Jocelyn Chandler scored two points.

Temple led 36-28 at halftime and outrebounded Duquesne 34-31.

No. 7 Rutgers 69, Syracuse 61

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Cappie Pondexter had 17 of her 21 points in the second half and No. 7 Rutgers used its pressure defense to force 26 turnovers in a tougher than expected victory over Syracuse.

Michelle Campbell added 18 points despite playing limited minutes because of foul problems and coach C. Vivian Stringer’s Scarlet Knights (16-5, 7-2 Big East) remained unbeaten at home in 10 games.

Freshmen Matee Ajavon and Essence Carson added nine points apiece as Rutgers won for the 11th time in 14 games.

Jessica Richter had 17 points for Syracuse (11-10, 3-7), which lost its 13th straight game to a ranked opponent. Vaida Sipaviciute added 13 and Chineze Nwagbo had 11 for the Orange, who are now 0-14 at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Purdue 50, No. 23 Penn State 44

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Katie Gearlds scored 21 points, including two free throws with 21.7 seconds left, and Purdue upset No. 23 Penn State.

The Boilermakers (13-9, 6-5 Big Ten) won for just the third time in their last eight games.

Jess Strom had 11 points, and Big Ten leading scorer Tanisha Wright was held to six points for Penn State (14-8, 9-2).

The Lady Lions, who trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, cut Purdue’s lead to 46-44 with less than two minutes left, but could get no closer.
