Colonials hold on for season-ending victory
Three Albert Gallatin players posted double-doubles as Albert Gallatin held on for a 70-69 non-section overtime thriller over University (W.Va) on Monday. Eric Leech led the Colonials with 19 points on seven field goals.
Teammate Jawaan Alston poured in 16 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, while T.J. Hall and Nate Turner each scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Hall converted on both free throw attempts while Turner converted on 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Jedd Gyorko sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer at the buzzer. He finished with 19 points.
Gyorko went to the line in overtime as he fired up a shot from half court. He missed the first two and Albert Gallatin called time to try and ice the shooter.
It worked as he missed the third shot and the Colonials came out on top with the 1-point victory.
University’s L.C. Jefferson led all scorers with 20 points and Dallion Lewis scored in double figures with 15.
The playoff-bound Colonials finish the regular season at 17-6 overall.
Fort Cherry 84, Mapletown 45 – Jordan Alderson lit up the scoreboard with a double-double, including 21 points and a team- and season-high 16 assists as the Lady Rangers downed Mapletown in non-section action.
Teammate Dan Davis led all scorers with 25 points, five of which came from 3-point range.
A trio of Mapletown players scored in double digits with Brad Hartley leading the way with 17 points, while Cory Dillinger and Zach Cumberland added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
This draws to a close the Mapletown season. They finish 2-22 overall, while Fort Cherry finished at 21-2.
Baldwin 76, Connellsville 53 – Baldwin jumped out of the gate early and never looked back as they cruised to an easy non-section win over Connellsville.
Julian Pinkston led with 15 points, including a 5-of-7 showing from the foul line. Ryan Einwag was perfect at the charity stripe at 7-of-7 en route to 13 points and Cart Kelley added 12.
Terrance McCrea led all scorers with 16 points, four of which came from the foul line, while Joey Leonard and Andy Lonigro added 14 and 11 points for the Falcons, respectively.
Connellsville concludes the regular season with an overall record of 11-12, while Baldwin finishes at 19-4.
Girls’ basketball
McKeesport 56, Albert Gallatin 39 – Amy Johns lit up the scoreboard with 40 points on 14 field goals and a 12-of-16 outing from the foul line as McKeesport handed Albert Gallatin a tough road loss on the final game of the regular season.
McKeesport led by one at the half, but then went on a 16-7 third quarter run and continued on for the non-section win.
Heather Patterson led the Lady Colonials with nine points, while Megan Bowers added eight.
Albert Gallatin finishes the season at 4-16 overall.
West Greene 62, Burgettstown 41 – Rachel Phillips almost single-handedly defeated visiting Burgettstown in non-section play. Phillips scored 40 points as the Lady Pioneers defeated Burgettstown on Monday to wrap up the regular season.
West Greene led by just two at the half and then went on a 18-5 third-quarter run and continued on for the win.
Kathy Bielecki led Burgettstown with 20 points.
West Greene improves to 8-15 overall.
Trinity 55, Southmoreland 41 – Mallory Chicone tossed up a game-high 18 points, including two treys as Trinity defeated Southmoreland in non-section action.
Chicone scored 10 of her 18 points in the second quarter, where they outscored the Lady Scotties 17-6.
Kelly Rollinson led Southmoreland with 12 points and Anna Coffman added 10.
Southmoreland finishes the regular season 9-5 in Section 3-AAA and 16-7 overall, while Trinity finishes 13-8 overall.
Boys’ swimming
Laurel Highlands 96, Latrobe 88 – Adam Collins and Chris Hunchuck each posted individual victories in two events en route to a non-section victory on the road against Latrobe.
Collins finished first in the 200 IM (2:07.50) and the 100 freestyle (51.63), while Hunchuck claimed the 200 freestyle (2:00.46) and the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.97 seconds.
Collins and Hunchuck were also part of winning relay teams. They teamed with Steve Hunchuck and Tony Marghella in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.26, and coupled with Jimmy Tesauro and Alex Mundel to claim first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:37.98.
Individually, Marghella won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.90 and Steve Hunchuck won the 200 freestyle (2:00.46).
The boys hope to cap a 19-0 year on Thursday at home against cross-town rival Uniontown with the meet starting at 4 p.m.
Girls’ swimming
Latrobe 122, Laurel Highlands 61 – The Laurel Highlands girls’ swimming team suffered a tough loss to host Latrobe on Monday in non-section action.
The Fillies claimed only three first-place finishes with Theresa Reilly leading the way with a 26.42 performance in the 50 freestyle.
Reilly teamed with Kelly Huston, Katie Semans and Erin Perry for a victory in the 400-freestyle relay with a time of (4:06.66).
Individually, Perry won the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.19.
Laurel Highlands (11-8, 4-0) hopes to finish the regular season on a high note with a win on Thursday against Uniontown.
