McKinney sets Cal U career scoring record
California University of Pa. senior All-American Sara McKinney scored a game-high 17 points and broke the team’s career scoring record to lead the 11th-ranked Vulcans to a 51-46 women’s basketball victory at Slippery Rock Monday. McKinney, who was named the PSAC West Player of the Week earlier, raised her career total to 1,896 points, four more than the total of 1994 graduate Lara Thorton. McKinney is also the Cal career record holder in rebounding (1,083) and steals (292).
California, ranked fourth in the region and winners of three-straight games, combined the win against The Rock with Clarion’s loss versus Shippensburg to move back into a tie with Clarion for first place in the PSAC West, each with 6-1 division records.
McKinney tied the record by hitting the front end of a 1-and-1 with 10:18 left, but missed the back end. Two minutes later, McKinney again hit the front end of a 1-and-1, breaking the scoring record and giving Cal a 43-36 lead.
The Vulcans (18-4) return to action Wednesday with a PSAC West game at Hamer Hall against Indiana. Slippery Rock goes to 1-6 in the conference and 7-15 overall.
