McKinney leads Cal women past IUP, 63-54 Sara McKinney recorded her ninth double-double of the season Wednesday night, leading California (Pa.) to a 63-54 PSAC-West victory over visiting Indiana (Pa.).
The all-American guard scored a game-high 18 points for the Vulcans, grabbing 10 rebounds. McKinney added to her school-record points total, running her career mark to 1,914 points.
Dani Mills had a strong game as well for California (19-4, 7-1) with 10 points and nine rebounds. Kim Nowakowski was in double figures as well, chipping in 12 points. Devon Powers recorded a career-high nine rebounds.
Mame Brumbaugh led Indiana (9-14, 2-6) with 16 points. Katie Glaws added 13 points.
Grove City 74, Waynesburg 63 – The Yellow Jackets remained winless in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, dropping a road decision to the Lady Wolverines. The win is Grove City’s fifth straight and marks the 20th consecutive time the Lady Wolverines have beaten Waynesburg.
The game was tied at 34 at the half, but Grove City (13-8, 5-2) pulled away in the second half for the victory.
Waynesburg’s Trista Murphy led four players in double figures with a team-high 14 points. Rachel Dillon scored 13 points, Candice Eyerman had 11 and Katie Lewandowski added 10 for Waynesburg. Waynesburg falls to 0-7 in the conference and 9-11 overall.
Grove City’s Abby Moose scored a game-high 23 points to go over the 1,100-point mark in her career. Jocelyn Kempema tallied 15 and Rachel McCoy added 14 points for the Lady Wolverines.
Bethany (W.Va.) 70, Washington & Jefferson 61 – Laurel Highlands graduate Lauren Slampak scored a game-high 21 points for Washington & Jefferson, but it wasn’t enough for the visitors in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference upset loss.
Slampak went 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line, grabbing three rebounds with an assist and a steal. W&J slips to 6-1 in the conference, 18-4 overall.
Jenny Place led Bethany (9-12, 4-3) with 19 points.
Men’s basketball
Indiana (Pa.) 67, California (Pa.) 59 – Indiana raced out to a 24-point lead in the first half, and then managed to hold off a furious comeback attempt from the Vulcans for a PSAC-West road victory.
Indiana finished the first half with a 42-21 advantage. California outscored the visitors in the second half, 38-25.
Kelvin Green came off the bench for California (13-9, 3-5) with 15 points. Travis Eisentrout was also in double digits for the Vulcans with 12 points, while Boris Mesnager scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Indiana (19-5, 5-3) had five players in double figures with G.J. Macon, Ayyub Ali and Marc Williams all scoring 12 points. Mike Mangel and Eddie Peterson added 10 points each to the game-winning total.
Grove City 93, Waynesburg 79 – The Wolverines won their eighth straight game over the Yellow Jackets, using a strong first half for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory.
Grove City led 46-31 at halftime with Waynesburg outscoring the Wolverines in the second half, 48-47.
Jered Gamble and Jeff Nero shared team-scoring honors for Waynesburg (8-14, 2-5) with 20 points each. Albert Gallatin’s Chris Moore chipped in 15 points in only 17 minutes of action.
Shawn Carr led five players in double figures for the Wolverines (12-9, 5-2) with 21 points. Phil Bushre scored 15, Ryan Eller had 12 and Mike Lukcic and J.D. Collar scored 11 points apiece.
Bethany (W.Va.) 89, Washington & Jefferson 64 – Matt Drahos had a double-double for the Bison with game-highs in points (21) and rebounds (13) to carry Bethany to victory over the visiting Presidents.
There was too much Drahos for W&J with Mike adding 19 points. Bethany improves to 6-1 in the conference and 19-3 overall.
Brandon Studer led the way for Washington & Jefferson (6-16, 3-4) with 12 points.
Lock Haven 67, Clarion 66 – The Golden Eagles outscored the home team in the second half, 43-40, but the rally for short for a PSAC-West road loss. Clarion slips to 5-3 in the conference and 15-7 overall. Lock Haven moves up to 1-6 in the conference and 3-19 overall.
Uniontown’s Terrance Vaughns scored 11 points with a pair of assists and two steals before fouling out for Clarion.
