Strikes and Spares

Scented bowling balls? I don’t know about you, but I think there is getting to be just one to many fragranced products available.

You cannot walk into a department store or even a hardware store without being attacked by some overpowering fragrance. Walk down one aisle and you are in vanilla world, in another you are breathing someone’s interpretation of lilacs. I know one thing, my grandmother’s lilacs never smelled like that.

What does this have to do with bowling?

I just found out that you could also purchase bowling balls that come with their very own identifiable scents. I do not think this is wrong, just a little interesting. Okay, I will take the one that smells like prime rib with a garlic and mustard rub.

To the local lanes.

News in from Mt. Vernon Bowl this week is that another bowler has joined the 300 club. Brandon Riggar bowled his first 300. I was not able to connect with Brandon to get his story, but I will follow up with more details on this accomplishment next week. For now, congratulations Brandon. I’m sure your fellow 300s welcome you to the club.

This week Championship Bowling moves to Fairbank Bowling Center.

This is one more opportunity for area bowlers to put their skills to the test against other area bowlers. If you cannot bowl in this contest, it is a great occasion to look over the shoulders of some fine bowlers and pick up some first-hand instructions.

Qualifying times for this round of Championship Bowling with a guarantee high score all night each night are 10 p.m. this Tuesday and Thursday, 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, Wednesday, Feb. 23 and Thursday, Feb. 24.

Taping for the show is scheduled at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27.

Junior bowlers please don’t forget that the Fayette Greene Youth Tournament is being held at the Fairbank Bowling Center. Call the Center at 724-245-7190 for details.

Manor Lanes checked in with numerous impressive scores. In the Monday Majors, Kevin Fasulkey 279/706, John Hardy 258, 246, 259 that added up to a 763 series. Gary George came in with 269708. Ricky VanBuren Jr. logged a 704 series and Ed Floyd a 275 game and Justin Malik a 263.

In the Thursday Niters action at Manor Lanes, George is credited with a 700.

Several State Troopers make up part of the action in the Thursday Niters.

One officer, Dave Simpson, after spending the day seeing to our safety, still found the concentration to bowl an impressive 279 game and a 680 series.

Klondike Lanes in Masontown is hosting the St. Jude’s Charity event beginning at noon Sunday, Feb. 27.

I have been talking about this event for a while and every time I receive an update from Joe it is getting bigger. I hope to be able to bring you all the details of this event next week.

Back to fragrances.

The smell of coffee is coming up from our kitchen right now. That is a smell I could live with. The aroma of fresh brew is what starts many of us going in the morning and what puts us in an agreeable mood.

If we can have scented bowling balls, how about scented alarm clocks that set off the smell of the finest French roast. On the other hand maybe I would just lie there and “smell the coffee.”
