Basketball Kezmarsky excels
Brownsville graduate Penny Kezmarsky has started 17 of 22 games for Point Park College this season.
Kezmarsky is tied for fifth on the team in scoring (6.0 ppg), second in rebounding (5.1 rpg) and blocked shots (11), fourth in assists (1.5 apg) and 3-pointers (9), and sixth in steals (13). Kezmarsky also is fourth in minutes played per game (27.4) and is one of only three players to appear in every game this season.
The Pioneers are 6-17 overall and 5-11 in the NAIA Division II American Mideast Conference. They defeated Carlow College, 82-73, on Tuesday night to break a six-game losing streak.

Birnerova upsets Sanchez
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) – Eva Birnerova beat fourth-seeded Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-4, 7-6 (6) Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Copa Colsanitas.
Catalina Castano advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Maria Fernanda 6-2, 6-4, and Emmanuelle Gagliardi reached the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Conchita Martinez Granados.
In first-round matches, eighth-seeded Lubomira Kurhajcova defeated countrywoman Ludmila Cervanova 6-2, 7-6 (5), and third-seeded Emilie Loit beat Melinda Czinc 6-4, 6-1. Also, Agnes Szavay defeated Bahia Mouhtassine 7-5, 6-3.
Williams, Schnyder win
ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) – Venus Williams opened her quest to claim a $1.3 million gold-and-diamond trophy with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Virginie Razzano of France on Wednesday, setting up a Diamond Games quarterfinal against Kim Clijsters.
The third-seeded Williams would earn the trophy by becoming the first player to win the tournament three times in a five-year span. She was the champion in 2002 and 2003, then missed last year with a knee injury.
Federer wins easily
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) – Top-ranked Roger Federer beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday to reach the second round of the ABN Amro tournament.
Second-seeded Guillermo Coria lost, though, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 to Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand.
Federer broke Ulihrah in the second game and his only hitch was giving up a 40-0 lead in the final game of the first set. But he recovered and broke quickly in the second set for full control.
In other first-round matches, fifth-seeded Joachim Johansson of Sweden wasted three match points before overcoming Wang Yeu-tzuoo of Taiwan 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-3, while No. 7 Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia was eliminated by Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Also, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland beat Sebastien Grosjean of France 7-6 (5), 6-2, and Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands eliminated Andrei Pavel of Czech Republic 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
