Waynesburg men lose to Bethany, 107-68

By Jeff Debaldo For The 2 min read

WAYNESBURG – A stampede came through Waynesburg Wednesday night when the Bethany Bison came to town and cruised to an easy 107-68 victory over the Yellow Jackets in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action. With the loss, Waynesburg drops to 2-7 in the conference and 8-16 overall.

Bethany’s hot shooting was too much to overcome as six Bison scored in double figures. Scott Mezyk’s 21 led the way, while junior Matt Drahos recorded a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

“We have a ton of shooters on our team,” Drahos said. “Almost all of our guards are shooting forty percent.”

Bethany shot 55.8 percent from the field, including 50 percent from behind the arc.

Yellow Jackets head coach Frank Ferraro realized just how difficult this game was going to be for his team.

“It’s tough because it’s such a tough match-up for our team,” he said. “We tried to do some things differently to create opportunities, but everything we did seemed to go up in flames.”

Bethany’s stampede started right from the start. Midway through the first half, the Bison built a 31-6 lead, one which Waynesburg couldn’t recover from.

Bethany head coach and Waynesburg native Aaron Huffman realized that.

“We played very solid defense,” he said. “We hit shots early and Waynesburg wasn’t on top of their game tonight.”

Bethany improved to 21-3 overall and 8-1 in the PAC.

“I hope we’re peaking at the right time of the year,” Huffman said.

For Waynesburg, senior Ray Gillespie and sophomore Beau Wilson each netted 10.

Waynesburg’s disappointing conference stretch continued as it has now lost seven games in a row. The Jackets have not gone through a losing streak this long since the 1991-92 season.

The Yellow Jackets look to rebound against Westminster Saturday, before they head into the PAC Tournament.

“We need to just play better,” Ferraro said. “I think what we have to do is get better and play better.”
