ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) – Top-ranked Roger Federer beat practice partner Stanislas Wawrinka 6-1, 6-4 Thursday at the ABN Amro tournament to reach the quarterfinals. In other action, third-seeded Tim Henman topped Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-1, 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson hit 15 aces and knocked off fifth-seeded Joachim Johansson 6-4, 6-4, Ivan Ljubicic edged Sjeng Schalken 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, and 2004 Wimbledon semifinalist Mario Ancic defeated Olivier Rochus 6-4, 6-3.

Federer’s match was his first against Wawrinka, and the four-time major champion forced his opponent into errors during baseline exchanges and also capitalized at the net.

Federer broke Wawrinka in the fourth and sixth games of the first set and again in the opening game of the second set.

Federer takes a 4-0 head-to-head record into his next match, against sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia.
