An NBA All-Star countdown from 10 to zero

By The Associated Press 2 min read

A look, by the numbers, at the 54th NBA All-Star game, to be played Sunday in Denver: 10 – The perfect slam-dunk contest score, if a judge deems it worthy. This year’s judges all competed in the 1976 ABA dunk contest won by Julius Erving over David Thompson.

9 – The number of players who have represented the Pacers at All-Star games. Indiana has one player on this year’s team: Jermaine O’Neal.

8 – The uniform number worn by Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, who is one of three players (Tim Duncan, Grant Hill) making their seventh All-Star appearance.

7 – The number of first-time All-Stars: LeBron James, Manu Ginobili, Rashard Lewis, Amare Stoudemire, Antawn Jamison, Gilbert Arenas, Dwyane Wade.

6 – The maximum number of personal fouls allowed. Two players, Bob Cousy and Rick Barry, have fouled out of two All-Star games.

5 – Number of times the East has won since 1991. The West has won the last three All-Star games and four of the last five.

4 – The record for the number of shots blocked in a single quarter of an All-Star game (1971, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).

3 – Number of All-Star games in Denver (the NBA held its 1984 game in Denver, which also was the site of the 1976 ABA All-Star game)

2 – Number of points scored by Dirk Nowitzki in last year’s game, tying him with Andrei Kirilenko for low-scoring honors.

1 – Ranking of Kobe Bryant for career scoring average in All-Star games. His 20.8 average in six appearances tops Oscar Robertson’s average of 20.5 in 12 games.

0 – Number of points scored by Zydrunas Ilgauskas of Cleveland in his only previous All-Star appearance in 2003.
