Steelers scale back amphitheater plans

1 min read

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have scaled back a planned entertainment complex near Heinz Field, the team president said. The team has ditched plans for an indoor nightclub and might make changes to the roof design and seating arrangement of a planned 5,600-seat amphitheater, said Steelers President Art Rooney II.

Rooney cited the loss of a $4 million state grant and a downturn in the concert business.

The team had hoped to construct the amphitheater by June 2003, but the project was delayed by financial issues. The modified $7 million design may be completed in 2006, Rooney said.

Gov. Ed Rendell last year awarded the grant to the Steelers, but later transferred the $4 million to a $30 million parking garage project on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.
