Geibel’s season over
Geibel Catholic’s hopes of qualifying for the PIAA boys basketball tournament went down with St. Joseph’s quest for a WPIAL Class A championship on Friday night.
The Gators needed the second-seeded Spartans to defeat top-seeded Duquesne, but the Dukes prevailed, 54-52, at the Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.
A St. Joseph victory would have jumped Geibel into the state playoffs as the No. 5 seed out of District 7 (WPIAL), since the Gators fell to the Spartans in the quarterfinals, 63-47. Instead, the team Duquesne beat in the quarterfinals – Western Beaver – has qualified as the fifth seed and will play District 9 champion Elk County Christian in the first round of the PIAA tournament.
Winfrey sparks UPG
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg put four players in double figures on its way to an 85-62 victory over visiting LaRoche College in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference semifinals on Friday.
Kevin Conlon led the Bobcats (17-9) with 18 points, Duke Cooper had 16 and Ryan Moye added 14. Uniontown graduate David Winfrey hits three of six shots, including two of four 3-pointers, in scoring 11 points, and also contributed four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Pitt-Greensburg will play either Penn State Behrend or Lake Erie College in the AMCC championship game today at 3 p.m.
Track
Cal in PSAC indoor meet
California University of Pa.’s Brad Rager will be the top seed in the 200 and 400 during the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which begin today at East Stroudsburg University.
The Vulcans have seven athletes seeded in the top eight in their respective events.
“This is most qualifiers we’ve had in my three seasons at Cal,” said coach Ray Huhles.
Rager is California’s top threat to earn a gold. He also will run the anchor leg of the 1,600 relay, which is expected to include junior Jon Hall, a Connellsville graduate.
