Waynesburg Central advances 12 wrestlers
The Waynesburg Central wrestling team will be well represented this week in the WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championship because the Raiders advanced 12 out of 14 weight classes from the Section 5-AAA tournament Saturday held at McGuffey High School. Waynesburg advanced 10 wrestlers to the finals with six winning section titles.
Brian Knapp lost a 5-1 decision to McGuffey’s Matt Scherich at 103 pounds, but things started going the Raiders way after that with four straight positive outcomes.
Chris Neidermeier won a 5-2 decision at 112 pounds with Nick Garber pulling out all the stops for a 15-0 technical fall at 119. Dustin Henderson needed only 40 seconds to record a fall at 130 pounds and Ethan Headlee kept the ball rolling with a 12-1 major decision at 135 pounds.
Clint Podish fell just short at 152 pounds, losing a 2-1 decision to Peters Township’s Ryan Maize. Corbin Semple returned to the top step of the medal podium with a pin in 1:09 at 171 pounds.
McGuffey’s Garrett Hunter got the best of Steven Ellis in the 189-pound final, securing a 14-2 major decision. Zach Patton rebounded for the Raiders with a fall in 4:56 over Keystone Oaks’ Dan Pierce. Bill Morehead rounded out the title bouts at 275, losing by fall in 3:56 to Keystone Oaks’ Myles Caragein.
Two of three Waynesburg wrestlers secured the third berth into the district tournament with consolation final wins. Brian Leggett pinned Baldwin’s Carl Westren at 125 pounds and Scott Throckmorton won a 9-0 major decision at 140 pounds.
McGuffey’s Devin McGuier won a 6-4 overtime decision over the Raiders’ Cody Whipkey at 145 pounds.
The WPIAL Class AAA tournament begins Thursday night with action carrying over to Friday and the finals on Saturday.
