Norwin cruises past Albert Gallatin
YORK RUN – For Albert Gallatin girls head coach Shea Fleenor, it’s all about believing. Despite their 60-35 loss to the visiting Norwin on Monday, he believes in this team. “They are a very good team, but until they fully believe in themselves. Until they believe that they can win, we might as well not even play the games.” Fleenor said after the game.
Norwin (8-3) jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to four quick points from Alissa Schake and a foul shot from Erika Haitz.
Deanna Rivera soon added three points to get the Lady Colonials in the game, but the Lady Knights scored six straight before Albert Gallatin (4-7) began to slowly chip away at Norwin’s lead. Mallory Adamovich scored five points and Megan Barrett put up two, but Norwin held onto its lead to close out the first quarter ahead, 15-10.
Megan Bowers began the second quarter with a field goal for the Lady Colonials, but Norwin’s defense took over from there. The Lady Knights scored 15 unanswered points while holding AG scoreless. Norwin had extended its lead to 30-12 at the half.
“That was the run we were looking for,” Norwin’s coach Bob Schrader noted. “Take away those 15 points and it would have been a whole different game.”
Jessica Lint quickly gave the Lady Colonials a much-needed boost of energy in the third quarter with a 3-pointer. She later added another basket and two foul shots to lead AG in the only quarter that the Lady Colonials outscored Norwin. Bowers added three points and a foul shot, while the Lady Colonials’ defense held the Lady Knights to only seven points, four from Jessica Schake and a 3-pointer from Alissa Schake. The third quarter ended with Norwin still leading, 37-23.
The Lady Colonials fought hard in the fourth quarter but couldn’t seem to catch up with Norwin. Jennifer Laver was the first to score and she led the Lady Knights in the fourth with eight points. Haitz followed with three. A total of seven Norwin players combined to score a game-high 23 points in the quarter.
Lint had three points for AG, as did both Marquis Demniak and Heather Patterson, but Norwin had run away with the game by this time. Marissa Balmert made two foul shots in the final seconds, and a basket by Rachel Kalberer ended the game.
“I want the girls to know we belong out there, they are just as good as anybody else,” Fleenor said. “We just gave them things, wide-open lay-ups and second chance shots, that were key.”
Jessica Lint led the Lady Colonials with 10 points, followed by Mallory Adamovich with seven. Norwin’s Jessica and Alissa Schake led all scorers with 14 points apiece.
