Waynesburg holds on for win at Juniata The Waynesburg College women’s basketball team pushed out to an 8-point halftime lead, but Juniata College made a second-half run at the visiting Yellow Jackets before Waynesburg held on for a 65-61 non-conference win.

Katie Lewandowski led the Yellow Jackets (6-4) with 15 points. Candice Eyerman and Jessica Hemphill both scored 13 points. Lila St. Denis led with 10 rebounds with Hemphill grabbing eight caroms.

Jess Winemiller had a double-double for Juniata (3-7) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Kirk and Mindy Werner scored 11 points apiece.

Wrestling

Connellsville 66, Ringgold 6 – The Rams won only two decisions as the Falcons methodically put the Section 2-AAA match away for a home victory. Connellsville improves to 4-0 in the section and 6-1 overall.

Tyler Nicholson (103), P.J. Holden (119), Eric McGinnis (130), Buddy Sines (152), Adam Knepper (160) and Jason Doppelheuer (171) all recorded falls for the Falcons with Sines’ pin the only one needing more than two minutes.

Kody Pujia (112), Ashtin Primus (135), Andy Scheihauf (189), and Justin Haines (275) all had relatively easy nights with wins by forfeit. Mike Zavada won a 10-6 decision at 125 pounds while Josh Martin took a 7-3 decision at 145 pounds.

Mitch Pankiewicz (140) and Matt D’Eramo (215) won close decisions for the Rams.

Jeannette 36, Brownsville 24 – The Falcons won one bout by fall and three others by forfeit in a Section 2-AA road loss at Jeannette. Brownsville falls to 0-4 in the section as well as overall.

Matt Mayers won by fall at 140 pounds in 44 seconds. Kaleb Valentine (103), Craig Everly (130) and Jeff Allamon (145) all won by forfeit.

Brownsville’s match originally scheduled for Saturday at South Allegheny has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a future date. The Falcons will return to section action next Wednesday against Southmoreland.

Charleroi 39, Southmoreland 30 – The Scotties had a tough time on the road, dropping a close Section 2-AA match to the Cougars.

Zach Berch (112) and Jeremiah Bossert (112) had the lone wins by fall for the Scotties. Jess Basinger (125) and Steve Zubach (215) won by forfeit. Chris Skovira took a 1-0 decision at 130 pounds while Dan Fosbrink had a little easier time with an 8-3 decision at 145 pounds.

Boys basketball

Bentworth 69, California 56 – The Trojans led 18-15 in the first quarter, but the Bearcats rallied for a 29-28 halftime advantage and kept the momentum alive in the final 16 minutes for a non-section home victory.

Woody Stewart led California (4-9) with 16 points. The Trojans return to Section 2-A on Friday when they travel to Avella.

Ryan O’Donnell scored a game-high 23 points for Bentworth (7-6) with teammate Matt Lammay chipping in 20 points.

Burgettstown at Jefferson-Morgan, ppd. – The non-section game between the Blue Devils and Rockets was postponed due to weather conditions.
