Stuvek’s double-double leads Lady Mikes to win Sophomore center Megan Stuvek scored a career-high 30 points on 11 field goals and an 8-of-14 performance from the foul line as the Carmichaels girls basketball team edged West Greene, 58-52, in a Section 2-A clash on Monday.

She also pulled down a game-high 22 rebounds and added seven assists.

The Lady Mikes held a three-point lead at the half and then outscored West Greene 18-8 in the third quarter, withstanding a late charge by the Lady Pioneers in the fourth quarter to hold on for the victory.

Teammate Aly Staun added 10 points.

West Greene’s Rachel Phillips matched Stuvek with 30 points, including five 3-pointers.

Carmichaels (6-10, 3-3) visits Beth-Center on Wednesday.

Geibel Catholic 45, California 40 – The Lady Trojans outscored the visitors in the final three quarters, but the Lady Gators built a 17-point lead in the first quarter for enough points to win the Section 2-A game. Geibel improves to 4-2 in the section and 6-8 overall. California falls to 0-5 in the section and 0-13 overall.

California held quarter advantages of 10-7, 16-9 and 11-9 in the final three quarters with Geibel sprinting out to a 20-3 first quarter lead.

Abbie Renze led Geibel with 15 points with Natalie Hozak adding 11.

Julie Evans scored a team-high 16 points for the Lady Trojans while Ashlee Martinak added 11.

Jefferson-Morgan 82, Mapletown 47 – Jefferson-Morgan jumped out to an early 17-7 first-quarter lead and never looked back as they rolled to an easy Section 2-A victory at home over Mapletown.

Ashley Phillips led the way for the Lady Rockets with 27 points and Lindsay Olson added 13 points, including two 3-point goals.

Mapletown’s Brittany Buckhalter led all scorers with 30 points, converting on 14-of-30 attempts from the free throw line.

The Lady Rockets (3-11, 2-4) host Carmichaels on Thursday, while the Lady Maples (4-2, 5-6) visit Brownsville in a non-section match-up on Wednesday.

Hempfield 52, Connellsville 50, OT – Rachel Wanichko scored four of her game-high 24 points in overtime to lead the visiting Lady Spartans past the Lady Falcons in a Section 1-AAAA game at Connellsville.

Hempfield led for most of the game until a double technical was called on Hempfield’s coach with the Lady Spartans leading 38-34 midway through the fourth quarter. Rachel Means made three of the free throws and Connellsville made the most of the opportunity with a field goal after the inbounds for a 39-38 lead.

The game went back and forth in the final minutes, ending in a 46-46 tie at the end of regulation.

Wanichko scored only three field goals, but went 18-of-20 from the foul line. Brittany Bell was also in double figures for Hempfield (4-3, 7-6) with 12 points.

Ashley Benzio led the Lady Falcons (2-5, 10-6) with 14 points. Means finished with 12 for Connellsville with Brooke Bryner adding 10.

Connellsville hosts Kiski Area Thursday night in another Section 1-AAAA contest.

Greensburg Salem 61, Albert Gallatin 39 – Rachel Roddy poured in a game-high 19 points, including a trey and a 2-of-2 outing from the foul line, as host Greensburg Salem handed Albert Gallatin a Section 1-AAAA loss.

After a sluggish first quarter, the Lady Golden Lions erupted in the second and third quarters for the easy victory.

Teammates Mary Cook and Anne Marie Olesky added 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Heather Patterson led the Lady Colonials with nine points on three 3-pointers.

Albert Gallatin returns home against Latrobe on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Laurel Highlands 52, Belle Vernon 45 – A trio of Laurel Highlands players scored in double figures en route to a Section 3-AAA victory at home over Belle Vernon.

Taylor Johns led the way with 16 points on five field goals with 6-of-11 from the charity stripe.

Amber Sanner was right behind her with 15 points and Kayla Ashton added 13 points.

Senior forward Ava Nickens scored a game-high 24 points for Belle Vernon, including 7-of-9 from the free throw line, while fellow senior Ashton Neil added 11 points.

The Fillies (6-9, 4-3) visit Southmoreland on Thursday, while Belle Vernon (5-8, 2-5) hosts California on Wednesday.

Waynesburg Central 57, McGuffey 34 – Megan Summersgill led with 14 points, including 2-of-2 from the foul line, as Waynesburg Central defeated McGuffey in Section 5-AA action.

Jeannette Wonsettler had 13 points and April Vandruff added 12.

Emily Kuhn led the way for McGuffey (0-7, 2-13) with 10 points.

Boys basketball

McGuffey 61, Southmoreland 49 – Southmoreland jumped out to an early first-quarter lead, but after that it was all McGuffey as the Highlanders downed the Scotties in a non-section contest.

McGuffey shot an astonishing 21-of-29 from the foul line, while Southmoreland (7-9, 4-2) only went to the line three times, making one.

Jason Hutson led McGuffey (5-10) with 18 points, and teammates Brooke Sharpnak and Jordan Baker added 17 and 10 points.

Tom Beal led the Scotties with 12 points, including two 3-point goals, while Travis Pierce and Matt Odroneic added 11 and 10 points.

Southmoreland hopes to get back on the winning track against East Allegheny on Wednesday.

Turkeyfoot 78, Union 70 – Nathan Glass, Eric Wass and Tim Wass all scored in double figures and cleaned up on the boards as Turkeyfoot Valley withstood a 37-point effort by Kerry Jones in rallying for a non-section win at Union Educational Complex.

Glass led the Rams (4-8) with 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Eric Wass totaled 17 points and seven boards, and Tim Wass also contributed 17 points along with eight rebounds.

Chris Harbaugh added 11 points for Turkeyfoot, and Mike Hartman chipped in with four points and five assists.

Union led 20-16, 39-35 and 58-56 at the breaks, but the Rams out-scored the hosts 22-12 in the final frame to pull out the victory.

Jones hit seven of Union’s nine 3-pointers, Mark Lambka tallied 11 points and Isaac Riggleman had 10 points.

Turkeyfoot jumps back into West-Pac play tonight when it travels to Rockwood.

Boys swimming

Laurel Highlands 109, Greensburg Salem 55 – The Laurel Highlands boys swimming team continued to roll as they made quick work of Greensburg Salem in a non-section meet at home. The Mustangs improve to 11-0 overall.

Adam Collins, Steve Hunchuck and Chris Hunchuck each picked up two individual victories.

Collins claimed the top spot in the 200 individual medley with a WPIAL qualifying time of 2:09.41 and the 100 backstroke in a WPIAL qualifying time of 58.80 seconds.

Steve Hunchuck won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.15, while also winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.52.

Chris Hunchuck claimed first place in the 100 butterfly (58.44) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.88).

The Mustangs also finished first in two team events as the team of Collins, Chris Hunchuck, Ben Mundel and Jim Tesauro won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.76.

Tesauro was also part of the winning team of Collins, Alex Mundel and Greg Guseman that won the 400-freestyle relay (3:53.55).

Dave Johson finished first in the diving competition with a score of 151.90 points.

The Mustangs begin section play on Thursday at Ringgold.

Girls swimming

Laurel Highlands 93, Greensburg Salem 86 – Kelly Huston claimed two individual events and led the 400 freestyle relay team to a victory over Greensburg Salem in non-section action.

Huston won the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle, and was part of the winning team of Katie Semans, Jessica Yohman and Elizabeth Ulmer that claimed first place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:25.96.

Erin Perry picked up two meets of her own as she won the 100 breaststroke (1:18.28) and the 200 individual medley (2:29.93).

Kady Brewer won the diving competition with a score of 137.90 points.

The Fillies (6-5) visit Ringgold on Thursday.

Men’s basketball

Hood 82, Waynesburg 77 – Following back-to-back second-half comebacks at home, the Waynesburg College men’s basketball team was unable to withstand a second-half surge by Hood College.

The Yellow Jackets posted an 8-point halftime lead, but shot just 33 percent in the second half, compared to 47 percent shot by the Blazers.

Waynesburg (6-7) was trailing 26-25 with 6:48 remaining in the first half, but went on a 16-7 run started by a three-pointer by from Beau Wilson to end the half.

Wilson finished the game with a team-high 20 points, his fourth 20-plus performance of the season. Wilson also led all players with five assists and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the foul line.

Sean Robine led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Waynesburg returns to action tonight when they travel to face Penn State-Altoona at 7 p.m.
