Carmichaels girls down California, 51-21
The Lady Mikes nearly matched California’s game output in the first eight minutes, scoring 20 points in the first quarter Wednesday on the way to Carmichaels’ 51-21 win over the Lady Trojans in Section 2-A. Carmichaels built a 20-6 first quarter lead and cruised in to keep pace with the leaders with a 5-3 section record with an overall mark of 9-10. The Lady Mikes have a big chance to make a move tonight when they travel to section-leading Avella tonight.
Megan Stuvek was again tall for Carmichaels with 19 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Courtney Gilpin added 11 in the winning effort.
Julie Evans led California (0-8, 0-16) with eight points.
Monessen 73, Geibel Catholic 57 – Charrise Bassett tossed in 19 points to lead four Lady Greyhounds in double figures in a non-section win over the host Lady Gators.
Kathryn Gaspich and Perrial Pearson added 14 points each, while Kelly Mornak chipped in 12 for Monessen, the state’s No. 3 Class A team.
The Lady Greyhounds (14-3) jumped out to a 32-13 first-quarter lead, and led 50-25 at halftime.
Abbie Renze led three Geibel players in double figures with 17 points, with Danielle Cochrane adding 14 points and Natalie Hozak 13.
The loss drops Geibel to 7-10.
Burgettstown 48, West Greene 30 – The Lady Pioneers missed leading scorer Rachel Phillips once again, dropping a non-section road game to the previously winless Lady Blue Devils.
Chelsey Jones was the only player for West Greene (5-12) in double figures with 10.
Jamie Petres scored 13 points for Burgettstown (1-17) with Emily Wilson adding 10.
West Greene will play a Section 2-A girl-boy doubleheader at California on Friday.
Wrestling
Laurel Highlands 51, McKeesport 21 – The Tigers opened with a fall at 160 pounds, but the Mustangs rallied with a pair of pins and a 7-1 decision to take control of the Section 2-AAA home match. The Mustangs improve to 2-4 in the section and 7-11 overall. McKeesport falls to 1-5.
Dave Mari won by fall at 171 pounds, and then Mike Sible followed with a decision at 189. Roy Knox recorded a fall in 1:01 at 215, but McKeesport’s A.J. Simmons won by injury default at 275 pounds.
The Mustangs won the next six bouts in a row with falls by Cameron Muma (112), Greg Hogan (130), Nick Browne (135) and Zane Breakiron (140). Josh Klink (119) and Josh Boyle (125) won by decisions.
Laurel Highlands finishes the Section 2-AAA schedule next Wednesday at Uniontown.
Albert Gallatin 39, Elizabeth-Forward 30 – The Colonials stayed a match behind undefeated Connellsville in the Section 2-AAA standings with a road win at Elizabeth-Forward. Albert Gallatin improves to 5-1 in the section and 5-2 overall.
Boys basketball
Turkeyfoot Valley 74, Hyndman 64 – The Rams outscored the visitors in three of the four quarters with first and fourth quarters the big quarters in a non-section victory. Turkeyfoot outscored Hyndman 22-17 in the first quarter and 16-12 in the final quarter.
Bill Hinzy nearly had a quadruple-double for the Rams (5-11) with 21 points, 11 steals, 10 rebounds and eight steals. Nathan Glass had a double-double with 15 rebounds and 21 points, as did Tim Wass with 10 points and 17 rebounds. Mike Hartman was also in double digits with 15 points.
Hyndman’s Thomas Johnson led all scorers with 25 points. Bryan Shaffer added 20.
Men’s basketball
Clarion 83, Lock Haven 57 – Five Golden Eagles were in double figures with Michael Clarke scoring a game-high 26 points to carry Clarion to a home PSAC-West victory. Uniontown’s Terrance Vaughns scored 10 points with five rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Indiana (Pa.) 95, California (Pa.) 87 – The Vulcans had five players in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to combat Ayyub Ali’s game-high 31 points and 14 points in a road loss in PSAC-West action.
Indiana improves to 2-0 in the conference and 15-2 overall. California goes to 1-1 in the PSAC-West and 11-5 overall.
Boris Mesnager scored a season-high 22 points for the Vulcans. Sharif Bray had 19, Travis Eisentrout scored 14 and Mike Smelkinson and Damar Ruffin both scored 12 points. California lost its second game in the past three despite shooting a season-high 61.4 percent from the field and making 29-of-35 free throw attempts.
Pitt-Greensburg 119, Mt. Aloysius 99 – This high-scoring affair Tuesday night was the Bobcats’ fifth consecutive victory, marking the third time this year Pitt-Greensburg has scored at least 100 points.
Ryan Moye scored a game-high 31 points for the Bobcats (6-1, 7-7) while Duke Cooper added 28. Kevin Conlon had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Uniontown’s David Winfrey scored 13 points with five assists, three rebounds, and four steals.
Justin Ohler led the Mounties (2-4, 4-8) with 30 points.
Women’s basketball
Grove City 61, Waynesburg 51 – The visiting Lady Wolverines didn’t relinquish their 7-point halftime lead, holding off the Yellow Jackets for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference road victory.
Rachel McCoy scored a team-high 16 points for Grove City (1-1, 8-7) with Abby Moose reaching the 1,000 career-point level with 13 points.
Rachel Dillon led Waynesburg (0-2, 8-6) with 16 points. Katie Lewandowski was also in double figures with 10. Connellsville graduate Bree Williams hit a 3-pointer.
California (Pa.) 78, Indiana (Pa.) 46 – Megan Storck led five Vulcans in double figures with 18 points in California’s easy PSAC-West road victory. California, ranked No. 6 in the nation, improves to 2-0 in the conference and 14-2 overall.
Dani Mills scored 16 points, Sara McKinney had 13 points, Erin Dillon added 11 points and Lisa Gottuso scored 10 points in the victory. Dillon grabbed a game-high nine rebounds while Gottuso dished out five assists.
Robert Morris 67, Saint Francis (Pa.) 63 – The Red Flash couldn’t overcome a 9-point halftime deficit Tuesday night, dropping a Northeast Conference home game. Connellsville’s Beth Swink continued her solid play for Saint Francis (5-2, 7-9) with a team-high 21 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in 39 minutes of action.
Pitt-Greensburg 96, Mt. Aloysius 54 – The Lady Bobcats won their sixth game in a row and their 18th straight home game by making a school-record 41 field goals.
Tish Hines scored a career-high 27 points to lead Pitt-Greensburg.
Uniontown’s Teya Minor had a nice game for the Lady Bobcats (6-1, 9-5) with six points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Laurel Highlands graduate Amy Bandzuch was perfect, making two field goal attempts and a pair of free throws for six points.
Pittsburgh 62, Seton Hall 59 – The Lady Panthers turned a 23-21 halftime deficit around in the second half, rallying for a Big East Conference road victory. Jennifer Brown and Katie Histed shared scoring honors for Pittsburgh (2-3, 10-6) with 15 points apiece.
