Uniontown edges past Leopards The Uniontown girls’ basketball team rallied from a five-point halftime-deficit to edge past visiting Belle Vernon, 49-46, in Section 1-AAAA action Thursday.
The Lady Red Raiders (7-10, 4-6) trailed until the 4:10 mark of the third quarter, when they tied the game at 29. Uniontown enjoyed a narrow lead until 1:40 left in regulation, when the Lady Leopards rallied back and tied the game at 44.
A trio of Uniontown players scored in double figures as Marrissa Voytek led the charge with 14 points, while Annie Hodge added 11 points, including 3-of-4 from the foul line, and Lawren Davis added 10.
Belle Vernon had a chance to tie, but missed on a desperation three-pointer.
Ashton Neil led Belle Vernon with 13 points, three of which came behind the three-point arc, while Kayla Nuccetelli added 10.
Uniontown visits Indiana Monday, while Belle Vernon hosts Yough.
Frazier 50, Charleroi 40 – Brooke Carson posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Frazier girls basketball team downed Charleroi in a Section 5-AA matchup Thursday.
The Lady Commodores held a narrow margin the entire game and held a six-point lead at halftime.
Carson had help from junior guard Larrissa Kulikoski, who scored 11 points, and Amanda White, who added 10 points.
A.J. Morgan pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Lady Cougarrs’ Jen Crabb led all scorers with 25 points.
Frazier (5-5, 9-10) takes on Burgettstown Monday at home.
Brownsville 34, Bentworth 32 – Julia Martini scored a game-high 14 points, including two treys, as Brownsville edged past Bentworth in Section 4-AAA action.
Ashley Kaminsky hit the front end of a 1-and-1 late in the game that put the Lady Falcons up by two.
Bentworth had a chance to win as they put up a desperation three-pointer as time expired.
Laranda Isaac also scored in double figures for Brownsville with 10 points.
Cathy Yanacci led Bentworth with 11 points on five field goals.
Brownsville visits Beth-Center Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Yough 47, Laurel Highlands 36 – Jenny Coughenour lit up the scoreboard with a game-high 15 points on a 4-of-9 performance which included a trey as Yough slid past Laurel Highlands in a Section 3-AAA matchup.
Teammate Brooke Orange added 13 points, three of which were from behind the three-point arc.
Taylor Johns led the Fillies (5-5) with 13 points, including 9-of-18 from the foul line, while Kim Seese added 10 points.
Laurel Highlands hopes to put one in the win column Monday at Derry.
Connellsville 48, Albert Gallatin 33 – Rachel Means poured in a game-high 15 points as the Lady Falcons breezed to an easy Section 1-AAAA victory over visiting Albert Gallatin.
The Lady Falcons (13-7, 4-6) jumped out to an early first-quarter lead and never looked back as they handed Albert Gallatin it’s 10th section loss and 11th overall.
Senior forward Lydia Davis had the hot hand for the Lady Colonials with 14 points and a perfect 4-of-4 outing from the foul line.
Connellsville begins a two-game road trip Monday against Penn-Trafford, while AG hosts Hempfield. Tip-off time for both games is 7:30 p.m.
Indiana 54, Southmoreland 40 – Gina Piccolini led Indiana with 10 points en route to a Section 3-AAA win over host Southmoreland.
Twenty one of the Lady Scotties 40 points were scored at the foul line as Vanessa Abel scored a team-high 16 points, including nine free throws, and Kelly Rollinson added 13 points, including eight free throws.
The Lady Little Indians’ defense stepped up as they held Southmoreland to just nine first-quarter points and two in the third period.
Southmoreland begins a two-game road trip Monday at Mount Pleasant and Thursday at Belle Vernon.
Elizabeth-Forward 48, Waynesburg Central 36 – Bethany Carney scored 11 points and Chrissy Burnsworth added 10 as Elizabeth-Forward defeated host Waynesburg Central in a Section 4-AAA contest.
The Lady Warriors jumped out to an early 18-4 first-quarter lead and kept rolling as they handed Waynesburg it’s seventh section loss and 10th overall.
Senior forward Jeannette Wonstettler led all scorers with 16 points and a 12-of-16 performance from the charity stripe.
The Lady Raiders shot 14-of-19 from the foul line compared to Elizabeth-Forward’s 3-of-9 showing.
Miatta Touthman led Waynesburg with 10 rebounds.
Waynesburg hosts West Mifflin Monday.
Boys swimming
Laurel Highlands 95, McKeesport 58 – Adam Collins claimed individual victories in the 200 freestyle (1:51.59) and the 100 butterfly (54.75) to lead the undefeated Laurel Highlands boys swim team past McKeesport in a Section 5-AA meet at home Thursday.
Collins teamed with Tony Marghella, Steve Hunchuck and Jim Tesauro for a first-place finish in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:46.93.
Collins, Marghella and Tesauro teamed with Ben Shinsky for a victory in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:40.36.
Individually, Marghella won the 50-freestyle in 24 seconds flat, Alex Mundel won the 500-freestyle (5:52.16), Chris Hunchuck won the 200 IM (2:17.06) and Dave Johnson won the diving competition with a score of 156.25.
The unbeaten Mustangs (14-0, 2-0) travel to Peters Township Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Girls swimming
Laurel Highlands 95, McKeesport 69 – Erin Perry picked up individual victories in the 200 IM (2:30.45) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.22) en route to a Section 5-AAA win over visiting McKeesport.
Perry teamed with Jeannette Mayfield, Denise Martin and Kelly Huston for a first-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:55.57.
The Fillies also claimed the 400 freestyle relay as the team of Huston, Martin, Perry and Elizabeth Ulmer with a time of 4:25.97.
Individually, Huston won the 200-freestyle (2:14.43), Denise Martin won the 500-freestyle (6:23.78), Casey Martin the 100 backstroke (1:14.43) and Emily Powell won the diving competition with a score of 111.80.
Laurel Highlands (8-6, 2-0) visits McKeesport Tuesday at 6 p.m.
