Stoner’s double-double sparks Waynesburg to Section 4-AAA victory over Elizabeth-Forward Nate Stoner put together a double-double with 20 points, including 6 of 7 from the foul line and 10 rebounds, as the Waynesburg Central boys basketball team downed visiting Elizabeth-Forward 55-52 in a Section 4-AAA match-up Friday.

Stoner grabbed his tenth rebound with :08 remaining in regulation and was sent to the foul line, where he hit both ends of a 1-and-1 to put the Raiders up by three.

The Warriors put up a last second desperation three-pointer, but it was off the mark and Waynesburg held on for it’s seventh win in the section and 11th overall.

Junior Zack Phillips also contributed big offensively with 15 points.

Elizabeth-Forward’s Steve Sweich led all scorers with 26 points, while teammate Jason Springer added 14.

West Mifflin is next up on the Waynesburg schedule on Tuesday.

Carmichaels 71, Avella 66 – Carmichaels clinched a WPIAL playoff berth with a Section 2-A victory at Avella.

The victory keeps the Mikes (14-4, 8-1) one-half game in back of first-place Geibel Catholic.

The two meet in Carmichaels on Tuesday night with Gators coach Ken Misiak attempting to notch his 700th win.

The Mikes lost in overtime at Geibel earlier this season, 66-64.

Against the fourth-place Eagles (5-11, 4-5), Carmichaels led 14-9, 30-21 and 45-39 at the breaks before surviving a shootout in the final frame when the two teams combined for 53 points.

Jared Lapkowicz hit a pair of 3-pointers and made 10 of 12 free throws in scoring a game-high 26 points for the Mikes. Jeff Lapkowicz, who also hit a pair of treys, followed with 15 points and Tyrone Pinson added 12.

Drew Klem led Avella with 23 points.

California 79, West Greene 50 – After only a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter, California erupted for 26 second-quarter points, compared to West Greene’s seven, and continued to roll en route a 29-point victory over the Pioneers in a Section 2-A contest.

Four Trojan ball players scored in double digits, as Woody Stewart and Chris McVicker led the way with 18 points, and Andy Galis and Mike Hrivnak added 12 and 11 points.

Travis Isiminger led West Greene with a game-high 20 points, including four three-point goals and Marcus Simms added 14 points and Jake Kerch scored 11.

California begins a two-game road trip on Tuesday at Jefferson-Morgan, and on Friday the Rockets visit the Monessen Greyhounds.

West Greene hopes to put one in the win column with a home game Tuesday against Avella.

Brownsville 72, Indiana 47 – After a seven-game losing skid, Brownsville has won two straight with a convincing Section 3-AAA victory over visiting Indiana.

Deadlocked at 10 points after the first quarter, the Brownsville offense put together three 20-plus quarters and finished strong against the 2-8 Little Indians.

Junior center Adam Kezmarsky led all scorers with 16 points and a perfect 6-of-6 outing from the foul line.

Kevin Garbutt contributed offensively with 14 points and Justin Binion added 10 points, including two treys.

The Falcons (2-8, 8-11) hope to make it three straight on Tuesday at home against Mount Pleasant.

Southmoreland 65, Chartiers-Houston 52 – After a tough loss to Fort Cherry on Tuesday, Southmoreland rallied back for an easy Section 5-AA victory over visiting Chartiers-Houston.

Matt Odroneic led the way with 20 points, including 7 of 8 from the charity stripe.

Teammates Travis Pierce and T.J. Dunn added 15 and 10 points for the Scotties (12-8, 6-3).

Southmoreland enjoyed a 13-point lead at halftime and kept the pressure on the Buccaneers, outscoring them in the final two quarters.

Derek Lowe led Chartiers with 13 points and Jordan Cypher added 11 points, three of which came behind the three-point arc.

The Scotties hope to make it two in a row as they travel to Beth-Center on Tuesday.

Turkeyfoot Valley 53, Meyersdale 36 – Sophomore Tim Wass posted a double-double with a game-high 12 points and 17 rebounds, as Turkeyfoot rolled to an easy West Pac South victory over host Meyersdale.

Three other Rams scored in double figures as Bill Hinzy, Eric Wass and Cody Colflesh each had 11 points. Hinzy also added six rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Trailing by two at the end of the first-quarter, Turkeyfoot kicked up its offensive game and never looked back easily outscoring Meyersdale in the final three periods.

Matt Stahl had the hot hand for Meyersdale with 10 points.

Turkeyfoot Valley (6-11, 4-3) visits Salisbury on at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls’ basketball

West Greene 46, California 28 – Rachel Phillips poured in a game-high 27 points, including 8 of 9 from the free throw line, as West Greene downed California in a Section 2-A contest.

The Lady Pioneers took the early lead and never looked back as they handed Cal it’s ninth loss in the section and seventeenth overall.

Laurel McCrory, Julie Evans and Ashlee Martinak each scored seven points for the Lady Trojans.

West Greene hopes to make it two-straight as it hosts Avella on Monday.

California visits Jefferson-Morgan on Monday.
