Binder fans nine in Carmichaels’ win
Brian Binder fired a five-hitter and Charlie Humes and Gene Franks each doubled and singled as Carmichaels improved to 20-3 with a 5-2 victory over visiting Mill Run in Fayette County Baseball League action on Tuesday. Binder struck out nine and walked four to up his record to 5-1.
The game was tied 1-1 until the Copperheads scored a run in the bottom of the third and took control with two more in the fourth.
Joe Leonard started the fourth-inning rally with a single and a stolen base. After Brian Gerginski walked, Chris Buncic singled in Leonard, and George Taylor brought in Gerginski with a ground out to make it 4-1.
Mill Run (14-11), which scored its first run on Dennis Show’s run-scoring double in the third, loaded the bases with none out in the sixth, but Binder stood tough, allowing only John Warrick’s RBI fielder’s choice before closing the door to leave Carmichaels up 4-2.
The Copperheads added an insurance run in the sixth and Binder closed out the game with a scoreless seventh.
Leonard and Buncic each singled twice for Carmichaels.
Chris Lynn went the distance in a losing effort for Mill Run.
Carmichaels is in action again today when it hosts Mario’s at 6 p.m.
Wana B Heros 3, Mario’s 1 – Drew Denham tossed five shutout innings and Justin Corso doubled, singled and hit a sacrifice fly as Wana B Heros upended visiting Mario’s.
Denham allowed three hits and five walks with one strikeout to earn the win.
Craig Hriblan gave up one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts in tossing the final two frames to earn the save.
Wana B Heros (10-14-1) scored single runs in the first, third and sixth in building a 3-0 lead.
Denham helped his own cause in the first when he walked, stole second, took third on an error and scored on Andy Mazur’s fielder’s choice.
Jamie Kowalczyk scored what proved to be the winning run in the third when he walked, went to third on Hriblan’s double and came home on Corso’s sacrifice fly.
Corso singled in the sixth, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on Alan Smodic’s ground out and scored on Mark Shallenburger’s single to make it 3-0.
Mario’s (16-6) pushed across its only run in the seventh. Todd Dunham and Scott Van Sickle singled around Len Pasquale’s walk to load the bases and Dunham came in on Jason Greene’s ground out, but that was all Hriblan would allow.
Van Sickle had three of Mario’s five hits.
Losing pitcher Ryan Robowski pitched into the sixth, allowing all three runs on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
Wana B Heros travels to Waynesburg on Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.

Uniontown at Connellsville, ppd. – Game Three of the Fayette American Legion baseball finals was postponed due to unplayable conditions.
The best-of-five series, which is knotted at 1-1, will continue at 5:30 p.m. today at Connellsville.
