By The 2 min read

The quest for a state title begins for the Connellsville and Uniontown American Legion baseball teams today with the opening round of action in the double-elimination Region 6 tournament. Uniontown, runner-up in last week’s Fayette American Legion championship series, opens play at 10 a.m. against Bethel Park at Shaler. Uniontown battled right to the end of the best-of-5 series, right up to the final out of the final game with the tying run at second base in a 7-6 loss at Connellsville.

Uniontown coach Ron Popovich has ace pitchers in Bobby Madison and Nathan Fike, and a lineup that includes Nick Midlik, Brian Lipchinsky and Greg Palladino.

The regular season champions, Connellsville plays the host team, Shaler, at Shaler at 4:30 p.m. The staff ace of the Fayette American Legion champions is Chris Pepe, who came up with the right performance at the right time to clinch the final series. Travis Henry gives Connellsville coach Sherwood Hughes a strong 1-2 punch on the mound.

Hughes can also field a formidable offensive squad with Wes Hughes, Bobby Fulton, the Schleihaufs, Richie and Andy, and Casey Shultz.

The double-elimination tournament runs through the week. Plum plays Houston at 1 p.m. at Shaler while Sto-Rox faces Hopewell at noon at La Roche College in the other first-day games.
