Local trio continues quest for state title
The trek through the state baseball and softball playoffs continues today with three local teams taking to the field in the quarterfinal round. The Carmichaels baseball team opened the playoffs behind the pitching of staff ace Jared Lapkowicz and hitting of Jeff Lapkowicz with a 4-0 victory over Clarion at Burkett Sports Complex. Jared struck out a season-high 13 batters while twin brother and battery mate Jeff belted a solo home run.
The Mikes (22-1) play District 6 champion Homer-Center (16-5) today at 3 p.m. at Mount Pleasant High School.
The Beth-Center softball team had quite a journey for its first playoff game, taking full benefit of Elk County Catholic’s poor defense for a 6-4 victory in the first round of the PIAA Class A playoffs.
The Lady Bulldogs (17-7), the No. 3 seed from the WPIAL, play Leechburg, the WPIAL runner-up, in the first game of a local doubleheader at California University of Pa. at 5 p.m.
The exciting playoff run of the Waynesburg Central softball team continues in the second game of the doubleheader at 7 p.m. The Lady Raiders (19-3) needed 13 innings in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs, but the extra work paid off with a 3-2 victory over Brookville.
Waynesburg faces South Park, the WPIAL’s No. 4 seed. The Lady Eagles (20-3) defeated Chestnut Ridge, 7-0.
