D.C. United snaps Revolution unbeaten streak

WASHINGTON (AP) – Santino Quaranta and Jamie Moreno scored and Nick Rimando earned his fifth shutout, helping D.C. United snap New England’s 11-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 victory Saturday night. Quaranta opened the scoring in the 10th minute, scoring his second goal of the season a header. He also assisted on Morenos team-leading sixth goal two minutes later.

The Revolution fell to 7-1-4, and one game shy of the MLS record for an unbeaten start to the season.

In the 10th minute, United midfielder Christian Gomez lofted a free kick toward the center of the goal box. Revolution goalie Matt Reis tried to intercept the pass, but the ball caromed off a group of players and bounced to Quaranta, who headed it over a Revolution defender.

Before the crowd of 17,611 was finished celebrating that goal, Moreno moved past two defenders with a crossover dribble and sent a low, right-footed shot past Reis.

Rimando had to strong saves on shots by New England midfielder Steve Ralston with just over 10 minutes left in the game.

D.C. United was playing without Freddie Adu, who is playing for U.S. team at the World Youth Championships.

MetroStars 3, Crew 2

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Ante Razov scored two goals in a 1:47 span of the second half to help the MetroStars beat his former Columbus teammates.

Razov, playing his second game for the MetroStars after joining the team in a June 7 trade that sent John Wolyniec to the Crew, scored his first goal in the 31st minute on a play set up by Youri Djorkaeff and Michael Bradley.

Razov made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute, beating goalkeeper Bill Gaudette off a feed from Amado Guevara. Razov increased his career goal total to 80, giving him sole possession of fifth place in MLS history.

Edson Buddle cut it to 2-1 in the 36th minute, Djorkaeff scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute, and the Crew’s Cornell Glen completed the scoring in the 77th minute.

The MetroStars improved to 5-3-5, while the Crew dropped to 4-7-1. A crowd of 11,666 fans attended the game at 80,242-seat Giants Stadium.

Fire 1, Wizards 1

CHICAGO – Preki scored in the 80th minute to rally Kansas City to a tie with the Chicago Fire, the Wizards’ first point in 10 games at Soldier Field.

The Fire took a one-goal lead in the 37th minute when Jim Curtin scored his first goal of the season. Midfielder Justin Mapp sent a corner kick into the box where defender Tony Sanneh headed it down. Curtin then scored on a shot into the right side of the net.

Forty-three minutes later, Chris Klein and Diego Gutierrez fed the 41-year-old Preki, who tied the game on a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner past a diving Zach Thornton.

Preki entered the game in the 76th minute and scored his 78th career goal minutes later. It was his first goal since October 23, 2005, against D.C. United.
