Connellsville 1, Charleroi 0 – Travis Henry tossed a six-hit shutout and Chad Shroyer scored the game’s only run on a double steal as Connellsville clinched at least a tie for the regular-season championship with a closely fought victory over visiting Charleroi.

Henry struck out 11 and walked five in helping Connellsville improve to 17-0 while upping his own mark to 4-0.

Chris Marchewka was the hard-luck loser, allowing eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts in going the distance.

Connellsville scored the only run of the game in the second inning. Shroyer got hit by a pitch leading off the inning, took second on Andrew Spargur’s sacrifice bunt, went to third on David Sumner’s single and scored when he and Sumner both were safe on a double steal.

Sumner, Andy Schleihauf, Chris Pepe and Wes Hughes had two hits each to account for all of Connellsville’s offense.

Sumner also made a diving catch in left-center field to record the first out of the second inning.

Charleroi’s biggest threat came in the eighth when Henry issued consecutive walks with one out, but a caught stealing and two strikeouts by Henry snuffed out the rally.

County League

Carmichaels 6, Brownsville 5 – Carmichaels countered a four-run rally by visiting Brownsville in the top of the sixth with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning and hung on for a one-run victory in Fayette County Baseball League action.

Brownsville surged in front by combining three walks, a hit batsman and two hits, including Ken Musko’s RBI double, to score four runs in the sixth.

Carmichaels came right back in the bottom of the inning. Gene Franks reached on an error and advanced to second on Stuart Johnson’s sacrifice bunt. Duane Dupont walked and an errant pick-off throw put runners at second and third. Franks came in with the tying run on a balk, and pinch-runner Andy Manion scored the go-ahead run on Chris Buncic’s sacrifice fly.
