Swink scores 40 in Red Flash win
Connellsville’s Beth Swink has been the go-to player for the Saint Francis University women’s basketball team all season, and Swink continued her domination for the Red Flash Saturday with a career-high 40 points to lead Saint Francis (Pa.) to a 77-57 Northeast Conference quarterfinal victory over visiting Saint Francis (N.Y.) Swink, a senior forward, was unstoppable under the basket, making 13-of-18 field goal attempts and all 14 free throws she attempted. The 40-point total is the second-most in an NEC Tournament game behind the Red Flash’s Jess Zinobile’s 46-point effort against Long Island University on March 4, 2000.
Swink also stamped her name in the NEC record book with the third-most free throws made (14) and the fourth-most field goals made (13) in a playoff game.
Saint Francis, winners of its past 12 games, hosts Quinnipiac Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a NEC semifinal contest. The Red Flash have won eight of the past nine Northeast Conference Tournament titles and a league-record 25 consecutive NEC Tournament games dating back to 1996.
