NHL: Gerber leads Canes to 2-1 win over Senators
OTTAWA (AP) – Martin Gerber made 35 saves to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night. Two of Ottawa’s three losses this season have come against Carolina.
Ray Whitney and Mike Commodore scored second-period goals for the Hurricanes (13-3-1), who have won nine of their last 10 games.
Dominik Hasek made 17 saves while Daniel Alfredsson scored the lone goal for the Senators (13-3-0), picking up his 600th NHL career point in the process.
Capitals 4, Lightning 3
WASHINGTON – Rookie Alexander Ovechkin forced overtime by scoring with 1:15 left, then got the only goal in a shootout to rally the Capitals past Tampa Bay.
The Capitals trailed by two goals with 11 minutes left and 3-2 late in regulation until Ovechkin took a lead pass from Jeff Halpern and skated into the Tampa Bay zone against two defensemen. He cut to his left and, despite being pressured by Cory Sarich, pushed a backhander past Sean Burke to tie it.
Ben Clymer and Bryan Muir also scored for the Capitals, who ended a four-game skid.
Fredrik Modin had two goals for the Lightning and Rusian Fedotenko got his fourth of the season.
Maple Leafs 2, Rangers 1
TORONTO – Bryan McCabe scored two power-play goals, leading the Maple Leafs over the New York Rangers.
McCabe scored on a two-man advantage in the first, and gave Toronto a 2-1 lead at 3:37 of the third. The veteran defenseman leads the NHL with 17 points on the power play.
Jaromir Jagr scored his league-leading 18th goal for the Rangers, who dropped to 1-3 on their five game road trip.
Jagr had a hat trick in Saturday’s victory over Pittsburgh, his former team.
Eric Lindros played New York for the first time since signing with Toronto over the summer. Lindros didn’t record a point, but had a physical game against his former team.
Sabres 4, Devils 1
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Chris Drury had a goal and assist in Buffalo’s win over New Jersey, helping the Sabres snap an 11-game winless streak against the Devils.
J.P. Dumont also had a goal and assist, while defenseman Brian Campbell, with the go-ahead goal, and Daniel Briere also scored. Martin Biron stopped 21 shots for the Sabres, who had gone 0-8-3 against the Devils since a 2-1 win at Buffalo on Jan. 12, 2002.
Buffalo also improved to 9-9-0 this season, winning only its third game in the last 10.
Canadiens 4, Panthers 3
MONTREAL – Saku Koivu scored his second goal of the game with four seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Canadiens past Florida, extending the Panthers’ season-high losing streak to nine games.
Stephen Weiss drew the Panthers even 15:11 into the third, silencing the sellout crowd of 21,273 as the Panthers came back with three straight goals in the period to tie it at 3.
Predators 3, Kings 2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Paul Kariya and Kimmo Timonen each had a goal and an assist to lead the Predators past Los Angeles.
Adam Hall broke a 2-2 tie with 13:26 left in the third period on a wraparound power-play goal from the left side of the net. It was the fourth straight win for the Predators.
Eric Belanger and Jeff Cowan scored for Los Angeles.
