Ferrie leads Dunhill Links after three rounds ST ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) – Kenneth Ferrie of England shot a 5-under-par 67 on The Old Course Saturday to open a five-stroke lead after the third round of the Dunhill Links Championship.
He was at 13-under 203 and followed at 208 by Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie (73), Sweden’s Henrik Stenson (65) and Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez (71).
Ferrie was in position for a 65 on The Old Course, which would have tied the record score Montgomerie matched Friday, but three-putted the last two greens.
“By the standards I’ve set for myself, that’s not good enough,” he said. “I can’t afford that. It’s just giving shots away.”
Montgomerie was 1 over at Kingsbarns, the most exposed of the tournament’s three courses – the other being Carnoustie. Stenson played Kingsbarns on Saturday while Gonzalez was on The Old Course.
Chrysler Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – K.J. Choi shot a 5-under-67 and D.J. Trahan shot 66 Saturday to tie for the lead after the third round of the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro. Jason Bohn and Shigeki Maruyama were at 15-under, one shot back.
Choi, who began the day one shot off the lead, fell three shots back early in the round before birdieing the 12th, 13th and 16th holes at Forest Oaks Country Club. Trahan tied him thanks to an eagle on the 16th and a birdie on 17.
Trahan, who started the day tied for third, holed his second shot from 165 yards on the par-4 16th to move to 15-under. The Clemson alum ran toward the gallery and hugged several family members and friends on his way to the green.
Trahan followed by sinking a 12-foot birdie putt on 17.
SAS Championship
CARY, N.C. – R.W. Eaks moved a step closer to his first win on the Champions Tour, shooting a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the SAS Championship.
Eaks made four birdies over the final eight holes at the 7,177-yard Prestonwood Country Club, putting the 53-year-old in position for his first professional victory since the 1997 San Jose Open.
Eaks is at 11-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Bob Gilder, who also shot 66 on Saturday. Tom Jenkins posted a 65 to get to third place at 9-under, and Rodger Davis is at 8-under. Five players, including defending champion Craig Stadler and Hale Irwin, are tied at 7-under.
LPGA
RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. – Hee-Won Han considered herself lucky, and not just because she built a three-shot lead at the LPGA Office Depot Championship.
The South Korean golfer was one of just 71 players to finish the second round Saturday after a 31/2-hour fog delay.
Han shot a 3-under 68 for a two-day total of 133 after a career-best 65 in the opening round.
“We were just waiting, waiting, waiting. It was a little bit frustrating,” she said. “We finished today, which is a pretty good thing. I’ll play a little more aggressive tomorrow.”
Veteran Tina Barrett shot a 5-under 66, and former Southern California star Jennifer Rosales had a 1-under 70, tying for second at 136.
Swedes Eva Dahllof and Maria Hjorth, and Jamie Hullett each shot 69 and were tied for third at 137.
Two-time defending champion Annika Sorenstam had a 70, including an eagle on No. 1, and was six strokes back at 139. Rookie Paula Creamer had a 1-over 72 and was at 140.
Seventy-two players – more than half the 143-player field – were stranded by approaching darkness and will complete the second round Sunday.
But Sunday’s forecast called for dense fog in the morning, which could force a Monday ending to the 54-hole event.
“It’s very difficult to see us finishing on time,” LPGA tournament official Angus MacKenzie said.
