Mammarella gives Falcons tie with Bearcats Brownsville’s Marc Mammarella tied the game at 13:57 in the second half Saturday, and that capped the scoring with the Falcons battling to a 1-1 non-section tie with Bentworth.

The Bearcats’ Rocco Malarbi scored first at 36:40 of the first half before Mammarella tied the game off a Jason Bella assist.

Both teams had a chance to score in the overtime periods. Brownsville’s Dan Polbinale had a shot just sail wide left in the first overtime while the Bearcats had a shot ricochet off the goalpost and crossbar that was swatted out by Falcons’ goalkeeper Josh Roberts and cleared by the defense.

Brownsville (3-10-1) had five shots against Brett Naddeo while Bentworth fired 12 at Roberts.

Girls soccer

Connellsville 3, Derry 0 – The Lady Falcons received goals from Paige Puskar, Amanda House and Lindsay O’Donnell for a non-section road victory.

Puskar scored at 18:23 in the first half from a Samantha Brown assist.

O’Donnell assisted on House’s goal at 16:45 of the second half while O’Donnell added one of her own at 11:43 off an assist from Tara Hixson.

Katrina Kelly turned aside two shots in the first half for the Lady Falcons (7-5, 5-5) with Emily Kozel turning aside the only shot she faced in the second half. Michelle Yacobucci made eight saves for Derry.

Men’s soccer

California (Pa.) 2, Shippensburg 0 – Sheldon Graham and Pedro Palladino scored in the first half to lead the Vulcans to a PSAC victory.

Palladino scored on a header assisted by Camilo Hinestroza.

Graham’s goal was his seventh of the season, increasing his point total to 14 on the season.

Eric Graves preserved the shutout, his first of the year, with six saves.

Women’s soccer

California (Pa.) 1, Mansfield 1 – Erin Riggle tied the game midway through the second half to salvage a non-conference tie against visiting Mansfield.

Riggle scored the goal in the 65th minute on an assist from Katie Powell. Hannah Speigle made 13 saves in goal for California.

Women’s volleyball

California (Pa.) 3, Fairmont (W.Va.) State 0; California 3, Wheeling Jesuit 0 – The Vulcans remained unbeaten with a pair of non-conference win in the Wheeling Jesuit Tournament.

Katie Barker had 19 kills in each match to lead the Vulcans.

Allison Liptak had 14 kills with Mallory DeMarco adding team-highs with 16 digs and 31 assists.

California improves to 19-0 with the victories.

High school football

Washington 28, Waynesburg Central 13 – J.D. Higgins 4-yard touchdown run and Nick Patton’s extra point tied the Interstate Conference game in the second quarter, but the Prexies pulled away with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to hand the Raiders a road loss.

Higgins added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 21-yard run.

Greensburg Central Catholic 61, Southmoreland 7 – Jeremy Mains’ 64-yard touchdown reception from Aaron Stasko in the fourth quarter helped the Scotties avoid a shutout Friday night, but the Interstate Conference-leading Centurions had too much offense for the visitors.

Greensburg Central Catholic scored 33 points in the first quarter and added 21 in the second quarter.
