Dillinger leads Mapletown to golf win over Brownsville Cory Dillinger fired a 3-under par 30 Tuesday to lead Mapletown to a convincing 177-219 non-section victory over visiting Brownsville at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
The Maples’ Joel Kovach shot an even-par 33 with Zach Cumberland (37), Jesse Boord (38) and Ethan Kovach (39) all finishing under 40. Don Hilenbrant’s 44 was thrown out.
Ron Jones and Bob Anderson had good rounds for the Falcons by carding 1-over 34. Chuck DeCarlo carded a 42, Mike Peton had a 50 and Jeremy Kopako rounded out the scoring with a 59.
Mapletown (13-1, 9-1) returns to Division II, Section 8 action Thursday with a road match against Carmichaels at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Connellsville 222, Frazier 234 – The Falcons and Commodores took a break from section action for a non-section match at Linden Hall Golf Course with Connellsville taking the victory.
Jonathan Luczka followed up his WPIAL qualifying round Monday at Nemacolin Country Club with a 7-over 43, but Cody Boors led the way with a 2-over 38. Craig White carded a 45 and Braedon Foreman finished with a 46.
Brian Null was the low man for Frazier with a 44. Craig Rebovich shot a 45 and Mike Onusko added a 46.
Connellsville travels to Norvelt Golf Course Thursday for a Division I, Section 2 match against Mount Pleasant key to the Falcons’ playoff hopes. Frazier hosts Jeannette in a Division II, Section 2 match.
Jefferson-Morgan 179, Waynesburg Central 201 – Five Rockets had sub-40 rounds, as Jefferson-Morgan easily defeated Waynesburg in non-section action at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
The Raiders’ Zach Schloemer led all golfers with a 2-under par 31.
Chad Kokoska and Dylan Blosser led J-M, each firing 1-over par 34s. Matt Kokoska, Zack Basinger and Justin Hughes each finished with 37s.
After Schloemer, Rachel Rohanna finished with a 36. Taylor Moore (44), Matt Fox (45) and Anthony Jarrell (45) rounded out the scoring.
Jefferson-Morgan improves to 11-5, while Waynesburg falls to 2-14.
Boys soccer
Laurel Highlands 7, Greensburg Salem 6, OT – The game seesawed through regulation, but the Mustangs struck first in the first overtime period when Jarrett Pickens scored 26 seconds into the extra time for a Section 1-AA road victory.
Darryl Gesso, Alex Russell and Pickens spotted Laurel Highlands (4-5-1, 7-6-1) to a 3-0 lead. The Golden Lions struck back in the next six minutes on goals by Martin Bawkley, Matthew Mangery and David Artuso.
The goals kept coming in bunches for the Mustangs when Dave Hough scored at 16:12 and Brett Workman tallied at 13:01. Greensburg Salem’s Andrew Rice closed the gap to a goal with his score at 9:58.
Bawkley tied the game at 25:07 of the second half for Greensburg Salem (0-10-0, 0-12-0) only to have the Mustangs’ Borland respond less than four minutes later for a Laurel Highlands’ 6-5 lead. Mangery sent the game into overtime with his tying goal at 4:42.
“Most of the goals happened in front of the net with the ball loose and someone knocking it in,” said Laurel Highlands coach Brad Takach. “I hope we do a lot better tomorrow night (at Uniontown).”
Girls volleyball
Waynesburg Central 3, West Greene 0 – The Lady Raiders took a trip down the road for a non-section match at West Greene and returned home with a non-section victory by the scores of 25-21, 30-28 and 29-27.
Meredith Winters led the way for Waynesburg (5-8) with 10 assists. Marissa Spencer had a good defensive game with nine digs, as did Lauren Becker with five blocks.
Greensburg Salem 3, Geibel Catholic 0 – The Lady Lions won this non-section battle between the unbeatens by the scores of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-17. Greensburg Salem improves to 9-0 overall while the Lady Gators are now 8-1.
Natalie Hozak had nine kills and six service points for Geibel. Caitlin Solan totaled six kills while Chelsey Kreinbrook led the way with 11 assists. Abbie Renze had a strong defensive effort with 19 digs.
Women’s volleyball
California (Pa.) 3, Slippery Rock 1 – The Vulcans dropped the second set, 30-26, but finished strong with set wins of 30-22 and 30-28 for a PSAC West victory.
Mallory DeMarco led the way at the net with 55 kills and capped a strong defensive effort with 21 digs. Allison Liptak added 22 kills and 13 digs to the victory. Katie Barker, the current Player of the Week, was one of six Vulcans in double digits with 20 digs.
California (20-1, 4-1) will play in a PSAC crossover tournament this weekend at Slippery Rock, playing East Stroudsburg on Friday and Shippensburg and West Chester on Saturday.
Washington & Jefferson 3, Waynesburg 1 – The Yellow Jackets stayed alive with a 30-21 win in the third set, but couldn’t hold the momentum for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss. Washington & Jefferson victories were 30-25, 30-21 and 30-27.
Lauren Freeman had 26 digs for Waynesburg (1-1, 8-12) while Kim Wilson had 22. Laurie Lindner had a good defensive effort with 14 kills.
Girls tennis
Brownsville 5, Derry 0 – The Lady Falcons closed the season on a high note without a hard-earned shutout of the visiting Lady Trojans in Section 1-AA action.
Brownsville finishes the season 5-5 in the section and 6-6 overall. Derry falls to 2-8 in the section.
Bethany Seelye won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, but Kelly Davison had to work for her victory at No. 2 singles, winning 7-6 (12), 4-6, 6-1. Becky Barnhart needed a first-set tiebreaker on her way to a straight sets win.
Samantha Bochna and Amanda Johnson lost the first set at No. 1 doubles, but rallied to win the next two sets for the victory. Sarah Mathianas and Kalie Davis won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
“I said at the beginning of the season if we stay healthy we were a potential playoff team. But we lost Nicole Kerestine to mononucleosis early in the season,” said Brownsville coach Dan Lonigro. “We lost a close 3-2 match to Southmoreland and they’re probably going to finish second.
“The team that stays healthy usually wins at the end.”
Though the Lady Falcons closed their season, the doubles team of Bethany Seelye and Kelly Davison still has at least one match remaining. The duo play in one of the pigtail games Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the WPIAL Doubles Championship at North Allegheny.
Boys cross country
Greensburg Central Catholic 16, Southmoreland 44; Southmoreland 16, Yough 46 – The Scotties’ Chris Kiefer was fourth overall and teammate Billy Geyer was seventh, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Centurions in Section 4-AA action at Yough.
Southmoreland (5-1, 6-2) recovered from its first section loss with an convincing victory over the Cougars.
Matt Lochinger was 11th with Ryan Clarkson finishing 14th to give the Scotties four runners in the top 15.
Girls cross country
Greensburg Central Catholic 16, Southmoreland 42; Southmoreland 17, Yough 41 – The Lady Scotties managed a split of their Section 4-AA triangular at Yough with an easy win over the Cougars.
Stephanie Wiltrout was the first Southmoreland runner to finish, placing fifth overall in a time of 23:50. Jenny Bittner was seventh and Kelsey Moschetti was right on her heels with Crystal Vallincourt in 10th and Courtney Smith in 11th.
College baseball
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 18, Robert Morris 6 – The Roaring Lions followed a three-run first inning with nine runs in the bottom of the second for an easy non-conference victory in the season finale of the fall portion of the schedule called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
Robert Morris closed the gap a bit with four runs in its half of the third inning, but Penn State Fayette came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Rick Wilson improved to 3-0 after pitching the first four innings of the game.
Jim Prosser led the Roaring Lions with three singles, four runs scored and three RBIs. Jared Early added three singles and a double to Penn State Fayette’s 17-hit attack. Justin Corso had a double and a single.
