O’Donnell posts hat trick as Lady Falcons roll past Derry Lindsay O’Donnell posted a hat trick for the Connellsville girls soccer team as the Lady Falcons rolled to a 6-1 victory over Derry in non-section action Saturday.
Amanda House got things going for the Lady Falcons at the 36:03 mark in the first half on an assist by Tara Hixson.
O’Donnell’s first goal came at 18:19 in the first half on an unassisted goal and then again to kick off the second half at the 38:33 mark on a Paige Puskar assist.
Teammate Brittany Guess found the back of the net next for Connellsville on an Alexis Dolde assist (23:29) and Hixson picked up the game’s final goal on the pass from Jessica Shipley.
Connellsville goalkeepers Katrina Kelly (one save), Emily Kozel (two saves) and Jessica Ohler (one save) shared time in goal.
The Lady Falcons (10-5, 7-5) travel to Uniontown Monday at 7:30 p.m.
College volleyball
Waynesburg 3, Thomas More 2; Waynesburg 3, Westminster 0 – Waynesburg claimed a pair of victories in conference play Saturday, as they hosted a four-team match. The Yellow Jackets posted a five game victory over Thomas More before sweeping Westminster in three games.
With the wins, Waynesburg improves to 4-1 in the conference and 11-12 overall.
The contest between the Saints and Yellow Jackets on Saturday was a rematch of a non-conference match played last weekend at the MSJ Invitational, which Thomas More won 3-1.
Freshman Laurie Linder led a trio of Waynesburg players who reached into double figures in kills with 13, while Kimberly Wilson and Lorelle Marker added 12 and 10 kills.
Linder and Wilson each recorded double-doubles in the win over Thomas More, as the duo combined for 44 digs.
Lauren Freeman led the Yellow Jackets defensively with 33 digs.
Freshman setter Amanda Staudt almost became the third Waynesburg player to post a double-double, as she finished with nine digs and registered 45 assists.
In the second match of the day, Waynesburg cruised to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Titans, as four Yellow Jacket players again reached double-digit dig counts.
Linder led the team as tied her career high of 19 digs, which she set earlier in the day. She added 10 kills in the win to post her second-straight double-double and third of the season.
Junior Kaci Hlad led the Waynesburg offense with 16 kills, while Marker and Linder posted 10 and 12 kills.
Staudt recorded all 39 Yellow Jacket assists in the win.
College cross country
The Waynesburg College cross country teams made program history on Saturday, as both the men’s and women’s teams posted first-place finishes. The Yellow Jackets competed at the Bethany Invitational, which featured only runners from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
The invitational title for the women’s team is the first of the season after it claimed its first three titles in program history in 2004, while the men’s title is the first since the program resumed in 2003 after a lengthy absence.
Sophomore Michelle Propst won her first invitational of the season and fourth of her career. She finished the 24-member field at the Bethany Invitational with a time of 24:52.7 out of 24 runners, 54 seconds better than that of the second-place runner.
Freshman Megan Grover posted a third-place finish for Waynesburg with a time of 25:46.6. Following directly behind her were senior and Waynesburg Central graduate Michelle Thompson and Haley Hinds in fourth and fifth place.
Thompson ran a time of 26:16.5, while Hinds finished the race at 26:46.8.
Junior Meagan Bugula posted an eight-place finish with a time of 27:14.8, giving Waynesburg five top-10 runners.
Waynesburg (21) earned the victory on the women’s side over Bethany (50) and Westminster (57).
Junior Heath Piper posted a career-best second-place finish to lead the men’s team to the invitational title. Piper posted a time of 29:33.5, 15 seconds behind overall leader Ken Hopper of Bethany.
Immediately following Piper was sophomore Tim Monaghan with a time of 29:43.3 to finish third overall. Shane Gottschalk also posted a career-best finish, placing fifth overall with a time of 30:36.
Senior Trevor Vaughan finished with a time of 32:06.8 to finish 11th overall, while freshman Colin Brown finished 12th with a time of 32:07.3.
