Mustang soccer team gives Derry the boot, 5-2 Darrell Gesso scored two goals and assisted on two as Laurel Highlands cruised to a 5-2 win over Derry in Section 1-AA boys soccer action Thursday.
Teammate Cory Borland added a goal and two assists for the Mustangs (6-6-1, 10-7-1).
Gesso’s first goal came at the 29:26 mark in the first half on a Borland assist.
Jerrett Pickins scored the half’s second goal at 14:26 again on a Borland assist.
Alex Russell found the back of the net to open the second half at 30:47.
Derry’s put two scores together late in the game on a Mike Chemski goal on the assist by Tony Tatae (3:12) and also Justin Kavatehi’s goal at 1:36.
The Mustangs host Yough Monday in the final game of the season starting at 7 p.m.
Baldwin 5, Uniontown 0 – Baldwin posted 30 shots on goal compared to Uniontown’s five as they blanked host Uniontown in a Section 4-AAA clash.
Red Raider goalie Darren Webster stopped 24 Highlander shots.
Albert Gallatin travels to Uniontown (3-11) Monday in the final game of the regular season (7:30 p.m.).
Brownsville 2, Carmichaels 1 – Marc Mammarella scored the game-winning goal three minutes into the overtime period as Brownsville outlasted host Carmichaels in a Section 5-AA clash.
Justin Kiefer kicked things off for the Mikes scoring at the 35:11 mark in the first half.
After a long scoreless dry spell, John Marcolini found the back of the net with 3:29 remaining in regulation on the assist by Mammarella, which forced the overtime period.
Carey Zivkovich assisted on the game-winner at the seven-minute mark as the Falcons posted the win.
Brownsville goalkeeper Jordan Sealy posted six saves and Leandro Culp had 13 saves for Carmichaels.
Waynesburg Central travels to Brownsville (3-8, 5-12-1) Monday in the regular season finale starting at 7 p.m.
Girls volleyball
Elizabeth-Forward 3, Brownsville 0 – Emily Lucosh led with five kills and three digs, but host Elizabeth-Forward handed Brownsville a Section 5-AA loss (25-13, 25-9, 25-19).
Teammate Jessica Robaugh added nine digs.
The Lady Falcons (0-10, 2-12) look to put one in the win column Monday when they visit Mapletown starting at 7 p.m.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Mapletown 0 – Jefferson-Morgan blanked Mapletown (25-11, 25-13, 25-13) in Section 6-A action.
Geibel Catholic 3, West Greene 0 – Chelsey Kreinbrook led with 18 service points and 25 assists as Geibel Catholic rolled to a shutout victory over West Greene in Section 6-A action (25-10, 25-5, 25-15).
Michelle Tascione totaled 13 service points and Abbie Renze added 20 digs.
The Lady Gators are back in action on Oct. 18 vs. Mapletown starting at 7 p.m.
Women’s soccer
Wheeling Jesuit 4, California (Pa.) 1 – Amanda Lyons and Megan Graham each scored a goal and added an assist to lead Wheeling Jesuit (12-2) to a 4-1 non-league women’s soccer victory over California (4-9-2) Wednesday night.
Sophomore Michele Ewig scored her first team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 73rd minute as the Vulcans avoided the shutout.
Lyons scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute, then took a corner kick that was headed into the goal by Katie Groff in the 34th minute to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Graham then scored an unassisted goal and assisted on one by Rachel Napoli, both within an eight-minute span early in the second half, to give WJU an insurmountable lead.
Cal fired 17 shots in the match, but two WJU keepers combined for eight saves. Vulcan sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Spiegle went the distance and was credited with eight saves.
The Vulcans complete a three-game road trip Saturday in Indiana, Pa. (1 p.m.).
College volleyball
Waynesburg 3, Thomas More 1 – Kim Wilson led Waynesburg College with 17 kills and Lauren Freeman added 28 digs as the Yellow Jackets downed Thomas More in PAC play (22-30, 30-22, 30-26, 30-26).
Waynesburg visits Grove City Tuesday.
